Subaru is recalling more than 165,000 cars due to a fuel pump defect that can cause the cars to stall at speed. The recall order affects much of Subaru’s 2018-2020 lineup and the 2018-2019 Toyota GR86, which Toyota builds in partnership with Subaru.
Cars included in the recall:
- 2019-2020 Ascent
- 2018 Forester
- 2018-2020 Impreza
- 2018-2020 Legacy
- 2018-2020 Outback
- 2018-2019 BRZ
- 2018-2019 WRX
- 2018-2019 Toyota 86
Though that list constitutes most of the Subaru lineup, the recall only affects models with certain engines.
The cars may have a defective fuel pump that can develop tiny cracks over time. That can cause low fuel pump pressure, leading the engine to stall, run with a shudder, or fail to start. Owners might notice an illuminated check engine light when the problem develops.
Only fuel pumps manufactured between certain dates are affected. Dealers will replace affected fuel pumps free of charge. Subaru plans to contact owners beginning in September to arrange repairs.
