The third body style in the BMW 8 Series family has arrived, in the form of the 4-door Gran Coupe, joining the previously introduced two-door coupe and the 8 Series convertible. With the arrival of the Gran Coupe, the 8 Series model range now parallels that of the previous 6 Series, which the new 8 Series has supplanted in the BMW lineup (with the exception of the outlier 640i Gran Turismo). Unlike its 2-door siblings, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is available in 6-cylinder guise as well as with a V8 engine and can be had with rear- or all-wheel drive. Like them, it incorporates a full complement of performance and luxury features, as befits its position near the top of the BMW lineup.

How much does the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe cost?

Because the Gran Coupe is the only 8 Series to offer 6-cylinder variants, it’s also the most affordable. The 840i opens at $84,900, while the xDrive version is $2,900 more. The M850i starts at $108,900. Delivery is $995 extra. The 8 Series will be available for order in July with deliveries set to begin in September.  

Longer and wider

The exterior design follows that of the other two 8 Series models, with a twin-kidney grille in hexagonal frames and standard adaptive LED headlights with BMW’s Laserlight. The windshield and back light are less raked than in the coupe, and the Gran Coupe’s roofline is higher. The body employs a mix of materials, including aluminum for the doors and hood and plastic for the trunk lid. A dual-pane glass moonroof is standard, but BMW will offer the option of a carbon-fiber roof.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe rides on a wheelbase of 119.0 inches—nearly 8 inches longer than that of the 2-door—and stretches some 9 inches longer overall. It is also more than an inch wider and has a 1.2-inch wider rear track, which BMW says is the widest ever used in a production BMW. Rear-seat legroom is 36.6 inches—some 7 inches more than in the standard coupe—and headroom is 37.0. While the coupe rear seats are barely habitable even for children, adults should be able to ride in the back of the Gran Coupe—although not as comfortably as they would in a 5 Series. The center console extends into the rear compartment, but BMW still makes a center seating position available.

8 Series Gran Coupe interior design

BMW’s 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is standard on the Gran Coupe, as is a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The latest iDrive system incorporates gesture controls and haptic feedback for the touchscreen, yet also retains the familiar rotary controller. A head-up display also is standard while night vision is optional. The 6-cylinder cars get Vernasca leather, while the V8 version comes standard with BMW Individual Extended Merino leather. Soft-close doors and a Nappa-leather-covered dashboard are standard, but most driver-assistance systems—including a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning—are optional.

Two powertrains

The Gran Coupe is alone among BMW 8 Series models to offer a 6-cylinder version, the 840i, which also can be had with all-wheel drive as the 840i xDrive. The 840i models are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which here produces 335 horsepower between 5,000 and 6,500 rpm. A peak of 368 lb-ft of torque also is on tap from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. Paired with an 8-speed automatic the 840i scoots to 60 mph in a claimed 4.9 seconds. The AWD version trims that time to 4.6 seconds.

The turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 in the M850i provides the same muscle here as it does in the other 850i models: 523 horsepower at 5,500-6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque from 1,800 to 4,600 revs. The V8 uses the same 8-speed automatic and comes only with all-wheel drive. BMW’s 0-to-60 time for this version is 3.7 seconds.  

Note that while the 2-door and the convertible can be had in even-more-powerful, 600-hp M8 guise—or even 617-hp M8 Competition trim—there is no word so far on an M8 Gran Coupe, but we wouldn’t bet against one joining the lineup.

Standard 4-wheel steering with AWD

Four-wheel steering (BMW’s Integral Active Steering) is standard on the 840i xDrive and the M850i and optional on the base car. It steers the rear wheels opposite the fronts at low speeds to aid maneuverability, and at higher speeds the rear wheels steer in phase for more responsive handling. The 840i models get Dynamic Damper Control, while the M850i Gran Coupe is further equipped with an Adaptive M Suspension and active roll stabilization. The M850i also comes standard with M Sport brakes, which are optional on the 6-cylinder models. The 840i can be had with 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels, while 20s come standard on the M850i.
