- 2027 BMW iX4 sports a curving roofline with better aerodynamics and performance than the related iX3.
- The iX4 M60 model arriving in 2027 will have a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.7 seconds.
- The iX4 50 xDrive will cost $67,350 when it goes on sale early next year.
BMW on Wednesday pulled back the curvy curtain on its newest SUV, the 2027 iX4. Mechanically related to the iX3 electric SUV but with a sleeker roofline, the 2027 iX4 debuts as the more performance-oriented version.
The iX4 marks the latest vehicle showcasing the brand’s Neue Klasse design language, following the 2027 BMW X5 and iX5 in June, the 2027 BMW 3 Series and i3 that debuted last week, and the iX3 SUV that went on sale last month.
Like its relatives, the iX4 wears a vertical illuminated kidney grille that spreads out into light housings flanked by vertical running lights. A broad lower grille bookended by large air intakes suggests the performance lurking in its clean profile.
The iX4 has short overhangs, smooth sides, and a long wheelbase that contribute to its sporty look. Alloy wheel choices range from 20 to 22 inches. From the rear doors back, however, the roofline defines the vehicle. The fastback looks more like a grand tourer than an SUV, with a panoramic sunroof blanketing the back into an upswept tail with a spoiler.
Surely the roofline cuts into rear headroom and cargo room versus the taller, boxier end of the iX3. It’s a European look for sure. That didn’t work so well for the X4, which was an almost turtle-shaped take on the best-selling X3. It was discontinued last year. But the iX4 looks more cohesive, fluid, and alluring than the bygone turtleback.
BMW iX4 Power and Specs
Underneath those smooth sides are the next generation of computer control modules and drivetrain systems that help the iX4’s more aerodynamic shape outpace the iX3.
Both the iX4 50 and M60 are xDrive variants, meaning they have all-wheel drive and use a motor at each axle. Both models have a 112.2 kWh battery pack. From there, they diverge.
| Horsepower/lb-ft of torque | 0-60 mph | Top speed | Range | |
| 2027 iX4 50 xDrive | 463/475 | 4.7 seconds | 130 mph | 428 miles |
| 2027 iX4 M60 xDrive | 603/645 | 3.7 seconds | 149 mph | TBA |
Like the 50, the M60 uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup but with an enhanced rear motor. A new stator and more powerful inverter boost the output from 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque on the 50 to 603 hp and 645 lb-ft on the M60.
This is where that roofline and aero matter. Even though it’s mechanically identical to the iX3 M60, the iX4 M60 hits 60 mph in 0.2 seconds less.
BMW iX4 Charging
Like other new EVs from BMW, the iX4 uses an 800-volt architecture that provides quick though unspecified DC charging times. BMW estimates the iX4 50 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes, but that’s at a max DC power flow of 400 kW, which is more common in Europe than the U.S.
The iX4 has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port on the rear passenger side, so there’s access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without needing an adapter. It supports bidirectional charging, so you can power up air compressors or gear from the charge port.
The 15.4-kW AC charger should let you charge to full overnight at home on a Level 2 connection in about 10 hours.
BMW iX4 Handling, Steering, and Braking Upgrades
The M60 comes with an adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers overseen by the “Heart of Joy,” which is the big brain that regulates the drive system, steering and braking systems, charging, and regenerative braking. The adaptive suspension is available on the 50.
An electronically limited-slip rear differential should make it more spry in and out of corners and have more grip in wet surfaces.
The M60 has two more drive modes than the 50, M Sport and M Sport Plus, that tap into throttle response and chassis dynamics for a presumably stiffer and more spirited ride. It can also be dialed back into everyday comfort modes.
Structural stiffeners include a front anti-roll bar and strut tower bracing.
A variable steering ratio provides more resistance in sport modes but then loosens up in other modes or at low speeds so it’s easy to turn the wheel and park.
The regenerative braking system enables a full stop without a driver needing to press the brake in what BMW calls the “smoothest stopping” action in its history.
Price of the 2027 BMW iX4
The 2027 BMW iX4 50 xDrive costs $67,350, including destination, which is $4,500 more than the BMW iX3 50 xDrive. It goes on sale early in 2027. Pricing has not been announced for the M60 variant, which arrives in spring of 2027.
Like the iX3, it will be made in Hungary, not in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the X3 is made.
