The Hyundai Ioniq is Hyundai’s green compact hatchback that comes in three varieties: hybrid, hybrid plug-in, and electric. There are some significant changes for the 2020 model year, both inside and out across the line-up.

All three versions of the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq get refreshed exterior and interior designs, added infotainment tech and Hyundai’s safety suite, called Hyundai SmartSense, which includes active safety features and driving assistance systems.  Hyundai has also made some changes to the naming of their trim levels for 2020 Ioniq, as well.

New look front and rear

Outside, the entire Ioniq line-up gets new rear and front fascia and some updated grille treatments. It also gets LED headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights, new wheel designs, and new side sill treatments.

Inside the Ioniq gets standard upgraded infotainment screens that are larger than those in the 2019 models (they’ve been upgraded from 7-inch screens to 8-inch versions) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen is available on higher trims. The Ioniq also gets a new LCD info screen, touchscreen heating, and cooling controls and customizable ambient lighting inside on higher trims.

Additionally, Hyundai’s SmartSense safety suite now includes forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitoring system.

How long are the warranties on Ioniq models?

Hyundai still offers a lifetime warranty on both its hybrid and battery packs in the Ioniq and, for 2020, the company is expanding it to include a 10-year powertrain warranty. The warranty covers the replacement and recycling costs of the old battery packs for no charge to the original owner.

What’s new for the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid?

The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid gets all the above features plus high beam assistance and new steering wheel-mounted paddles to control regenerative braking.

The 2020 Ioniq Hybrid engine carries over from 2019. The Ioniq Hybrid is still powered by Hyundai’s 1.6-liter 4-cylinder paired to a 32-kW permanent magnet electric motor that makes a combined 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

There are a few trim updates for the 2020 Ioniq Hybrid. The 2020 Ioniq Hybrid SE replaces the 2019 SEL trim and adds the BlueLink connected car system. The Ioniq Hybrid SEL replaces the 2019 Limited trim and adds Qi wireless charging, ambient interior lighting, lane-following assistance, power-folding side mirrors, and  forward collision with pedestrian detection. The 2020 Ioniq Hybrid Limited replaces the 2019 Limited with the Ultimate trim and features LED headlights, smart cruise control with stop and go assistance, Harman Kardon premium audio system, highway driving assistance, and front parking sensors.

Slight price increase

The 2020 Ioniq Hybrid base model, called Blue, increases in price by $600 with a starting price of $23,000, excluding $930 delivery.  It also gets an EPA-estimated 58 miles per gallon combined on the Blue for 2020. The 2019 version got an EPA-estimated 55 miles per gallon combined.

What’s new in the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid?

Similar to the Ioniq Hybrid, the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid gets a few updates over its 2019 model year, and some trim changes.  At the base, the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid is renamed to become the 2020 Ioniq PHEV SE (previously it was just the PHEV). It gets smart cruise control with stop and go, an 8-inch display, and the same regen paddles that are on the regular hybrid version.

The Limited trim becomes the SEL trim and gets LED headlights, smart cruise control with stop and go, Qi wireless charging, power-folding side-view mirrors, ambient interior lighting, and a few safety upgrades including lane-follow assistance and forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection.

The PHEV Limited with the Ultimate package becomes simply the PHEV Limited and gets the larger 10.25-inch navigation system, Harmon Kardon premium sound system, highway driving assist, and front parking sensors in addition to the content on the SEL trim.

How much does the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid cost?

The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid gets an EPA estimated 119 MPGe combined for 2020 and also gets a slight price increase at its base from $26,200 to $26,300, not including $930 destination.
