2020 Buick Encore GX First Look
- New addition to Buick SUV lineup
- Slots in between Encore and Envision
- Will feature new standard safety and driver assistance features
General Motors’ Buick division will add a fourth crossover to its SUV lineup for the next model year. The 2020 Buick Encore GX will arrive early next year, and will fill a lineup slot between the subcompact Encore and compact Envision SUVs. The mid-size Enclave completes the “E” lineup. Buick reports that almost 90 percent of its current U.S. sales come from its SUVs. “As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC.
Debuted at 2019 Auto Shanghai
Few specific details have been released about the Encore GX, which debuted at the 2019 Auto Shanghai exhibition in China. At that time, Buick said that Encore GX would come equipped with GM’s eighth-generation Ecotec engines, along with a choice of a nine-speed automatic transmission or a new continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Early speculation that Encore GX would replace Encore in the U.S. has been dispelled, as both models will be sold in 2020.
Encore GX will have a cargo capacity that’s nearly five cubic feet larger than Encore and just three cubic feet smaller than Envision. That puts Encore GX’s luggage compartment measurement at somewhere between 23.5 and 23.8 cubic feet.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Encore GX will come with standard safety and driver assistance features including Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. A Rear Camera Mirror, which provides a wide, less obstructed rear view while parking and driving, and a High Definition Surround Vision camera system will also be available.
Specifications and Prices To Be Announced
Product specifications and pricing will be announced when the 2020 Buick Encore GX arrives at U.S. dealers in early 2020. For reference, pricing for the 2019 Buick Encore starts at $23,200, while the 2019 Buick Envision starts at $31,995. Expect 2020 Encore GX prices to start somewhere between those figures.
