2026 Toyota Sienna

The minivan class is small, and there’s not a bad vehicle in it. But the Toyota Sienna keeps winning our comparisons, our scoring, our Best Buy Award in its class, and a spot on our Best Family Car Award list. Why? Nearly 30 years of proven reliability, class-leading resale value, and the good economic sense of a standard powertrain. Available all-wheel drive (AWD) doesn’t hurt, either. The Sienna serves a family well.

We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of minivans, including the 2026 Toyota Sienna.

Toyota didn’t see a need to make major changes to the Sienna for 2026. Updates are limited to particular trims and make some previously optional equipment standard. The entry-level LE gets an 8-speaker sound system, power rear door, rear window shades, and a power tilt/slide moonroof. The XSE gets a new 12-speaker audio system from JBL. A new paint color – a metallic gray called Heavy Metal – makes an appearance.

Power, Ride, and Handling

The 2026 Toyota Sienna gets 245 hp from the combination of a 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Most trim levels are available with front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), but the Woodland Edition and Platinum come only in AWD.

On paper, that’s less power than the rest of the minivan class. On the highway, you won’t notice a power deficit. The electric motor provides low-end acceleration, the gasoline engine does the rest, and it feels about the same as the V6 engines most rivals use.

The XSE trim features a sport-tuned suspension that holds it a little flatter in turns, but doesn’t make it a sports car.

The Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica are the only minivans available with AWD. That makes the Sienna a good choice in the snowbelt. The Woodland Edition adds additional ground clearance – you won’t see it on dunes or rocky trails with the 4Runner, but it’s a good bet to get over the snowpack the plow left at the end of your driveway.

A tall driving position helps you see over traffic in the Sienna, and standard blind-spot monitoring helps with visibility. Active safety features include adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and lane-tracing assist. Toyota’s active safety packages are effective and unobtrusive, in our experience.

Fuel Economy

The Sienna’s hybrid-only powertrain makes fuel economy one of the best reasons to buy one. FWD models earn 36 mpg combined. AWD models get 35. Those numbers would be competitive in the compact sedan class.

We performed a yearlong test of a Sienna of this generation and found the estimates to be accurate. Road trips were easy — FWD models have an EPA-rated range of up to 648 miles between fill-ups or 630 for AWD models.

Kia makes a hybrid version of the Carnival, but it is FWD-only and rated for 32 mpg in combined driving. Chrysler builds a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Pacifica rated for 82 MPGe.

Every minivan available in the 2026 model year is family-friendly. The Sienna may be the most comfortable of the group with all seats in place, but it has the least total cargo space and the least flexible seating configuration. We think that’s a fair trade-off — you’re likely minivan shopping because you want to keep a family comfortable, not haul drywall. But be aware.

As with all minivans, three rows are standard. You can choose seating for seven (with a pair of captain’s chairs nearly as comfortable as the front seats in the second row, available with ottomans) or eight (with a 3-seat bench in that spot). The LE and XLE trims, however, are the only ones available with the bench; higher trims means fewer seats.

The Sienna has the most third-row legroom of any 2026 minivan. If you are likely to seat adults or older kids there, this one beats the competition.

The Sienna has two infotainment options: one with an 8-inch display and another with a 12.3-inch screen. Whichever you pick, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard. Other available tech features include a rear-seat entertainment system, a 360-degree parking camera, and the Driver Easy Speak intercom system.

Like most of its competition, the Sienna comes with power-sliding doors so you don’t have to ask kids to close a heavy door, and 3-zone climate control so they can be in charge of their own temperature.

Limited and Platinum trims include a very handy built-in vacuum, though they don’t give you a clever panel to hide it behind like the Chrysler Pacifica has. The FridgeBox, however, is unique to Toyota’s minivan.

Few buy a minivan for its looks, but Toyota does what it can to make the Sienna customizable. The XSE trim features a sporty mesh grille, while the Woodland Edition has matte-black wheels and extra ground clearance for an outdoorsy look. Meanwhile, the Limited and Platinum models bring a more premium aesthetic with metallic grilles, and the Platinum adds 2-tone wheels.

36 mpg
Over the year we had the Sienna, we appreciated its hybrid system every time we buzzed by a gas station. The Sienna’s standard — and only — powertrain is highly efficient. Thanks to Toyota’s decades of making hybrids, it’s smooth and up to the task.

Available all-wheel drive
Families debate whether a minivan or a 3-row SUV is right for them. Some settle on the SUV for foul-weather driving, but the Sienna’s available AWD means you can get sliding doors and sure footing in snow.

Hands-free side doors and tailgate
Wave your foot under a sensor, and the Sienna closes its doors and tailgate for you. This proves surprisingly convenient with a child seat carrier in one hand and a bag in the other.

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)
This is Toyota’s name for its bundle of active safety and driver-assistance features, and it’s standard in every Sienna. Features like radar cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist are included.

The Sienna has class-leading resale value, protecting you from the biggest expense of car ownership.
