2014 Toyota Camry KBB Expert Review
For 2014, the Toyota Camry represents the best example of the optimum 4-door sedan for the greatest number of potential buyers. Everything about it settles it smack in the middle ground of what the vast majority of buyers want in a sedan and, therefore, while not being the most exciting thing on the road it definitely has enormous and well-deserved appeal. The models range from the base L to a sporty SE Sport to the very luxurious XLE, and include a highly-efficient hybrid model. Midsize sedans are the heart of the car market and in 2014, the segment is more competitive than ever, with highly-attractive models from Honda, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Mazda, Chevrolet and Ford, but the 2014 Camry remains the top choice for the greatest number of buyers.
You'll Like This Car If...
You’re looking for a very solid deal with a very solid car, with proven reliability and resale value, no surprises, something you can count on to serve you well for the long haul. Welcome to the 2014 Toyota Camry.
You May Not Like This Car If...
If anything approaching an edgier style is important, there are lots of other good choices. All of them are excellent cars with good value. And, the Camry is not available with all-wheel drive, which may be important for dealing with bad weather.
What's New for 2014
As the Camry was significantly revised for 2013, the changes for 2014 are minimal. A new addition to the line is the SE Sport, available only with a 4-cylinder engine. The Sport also adds a standard sunroof, 8-way power-adjustable driver seat, and 18-inch wheels and tires.
The Camry has always been known for smooth comfort but, while it may surprise some, the 2014 version is more than just merely competent in getting down the road, even when the pavement takes a lot of twists and turns. The 2014 Camry delivers a better ride than past models, with handling and response that would likely amaze and delight previous owners. The steering imparts confidence, both in feel and the precision of its directional stability, and the rigid body structure and compliant suspension take up the bumps and turns with smooth grace. Along with the commendable ride and handling, the 2014 Camry also gets high marks for its quiet interior, which might even seem somewhat eerily silent. Add it all up, and the Camry no longer has to be considered for its utilitarian and resale values alone.
UPGRADED HYBRID SYNERGY DRIVE (HSD)
Taking a much-needed next step in the greener arena, the 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid features Toyota’s most technologically advanced HSD system to date. Light, tight and impressively integrated, the system yields spirited performance under all conditions and an eye-popping set of fuel economy numbers.
UNBEATABLE RECORD OF LONG-TERM VALUE
Certainly not the most thrilling subject, the cold, hard truth is that a primary appeal of the Camry is its long-term value, as typified by its proven record of reliability and its legendary resale numbers. It’s that long-term value that keeps the Camry at the top of the sales charts.
The 2014 Toyota Camry interior is everything you should find in a midsize sedan – roomy, comfortable, stylish and luxurious. There’s plenty of headroom, hip room and legroom in all positions, the seats are supportive and the lower cushion of the 60/40 folding rear bench seat has been configured to deliver decent space for the passenger in the middle, a spot that is often neglected. If those passengers need to carry some gear they’ll find the trunk is more than ample, although the Hybrid’s trunk is smaller by slightly over two cubic feet.
While the 2014 Camry doesn’t have the edgy looks of some of the competition, it has still come a long way from the almost-generic appearance of the past. No longer will you lose it in the parking lot because it blends into the background of the mall. There is now a wedge-shape to the profile, artful detailing front and rear, a grille and front end with more presence and an overall look of modern, contemporary substance. It’s a handsome car, by all accounts.
Notable Standard Equipment
The base 2014 Camry L sedan offers numerous power assists, air conditioning, cruise control, Display Audio with USB/iPod inputs, Bluetooth, Toyota’s STAR safety system and 10 airbags. The LE adds keyless remote entry, a multifunction steering wheel, and an upgraded Display Audio sound system. Moving up to the Camry SE nets you a dedicated sport suspension/wheel/tire package with unique trim, Softex covered sport seats and paddle shifters. The SE Sport adds in even bigger wheels, and a sunroof. The top-line Camry XLE sedan features dual power seats, dual-zone climate control, a power moonroof and premium fabric or leather (V6-only) upholstery. Both the SE/XLE V6s add Navigation and Entune multimedia telematics, HD radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The Camry Hybrid sedan offers LE and XLE trim-level appointments.
Notable Optional Equipment
The 2014 Toyota Camry sedan’s options are limited to color choices on the L trim and a power driver’s seat and moonroof on the LE. SE/XLE buyers can opt for upgraded Display Audio packages with Navigation and Entune – including a 10-speaker premium JBL system – as well as dedicated Convenience Packages and Leather-trimmed Ultrasuede Sport Seats, while SEs can also be had with a power moonroof. Camry Hybrids offer a Leather Package, Moonroof Package and two tiers of JBL-enhanced Upgrade Packages, one with Navigation and one without.
Under the Hood
Camry buyers can select from three powertrains. The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder makes 178 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque and delivers exemplary fuel economy, being rated at 35 mpg on the highway. The 3.5-liter V6 makes a thoroughly robust 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque and, with all that, is still EPA-rated at 31 mpg on the highway. All the gasoline-only powertrains are matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission. For those who want super fuel-economy numbers, the Camry Hybrid, with its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor for a total system output of 200 horsepower, is rated at 43 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway for the LE model, or 40 and 38, respectively, for the XLE.
178 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm
(PZEV 173 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm)
170 lb-ft of torque @ 4,100 rpm
(PZEV 165 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm)
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/35 mpg (6-speed automatic)
268 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm
248 lb-ft of torque @ 4,700 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/31 mpg (6-speed automatic)
2.5-liter inline-4 plus a 105-kilowatt battery pack
Engine: 156 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm
Battery: 105 kW @ 4,500 rpm
Total hybrid system (engine and battery): 200 horsepower
Engine: 156 lb-ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm
Battery: 199 lb-ft of torque @ 0-1,500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 43/39 mpg (LE with CVT automatic), 40/38 mpg (XLE with CVT automatic)
Toyota emphasizes overall value for the 2014 Camry while trying to entice buyers to move beyond the lower trim levels. The 2014 Toyota Camry L sedan has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just over $22,000, while the XLE V6 slips in slightly over $30,000. The Camry Hybrid LE starts around $26,000 and the premium XLE version starts below $28,000. To make your best deal, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price, which provides a reliable indicator of what others in your area are paying for the Camry. Historically, the Toyota Camry has shown above-average reliability with similarly-robust long-term resale value. Even with intense pressure from the competition, that tradition seems likely to continue with this the 2014 model.
