"Hardly a value!"

This car is hardly a value when EVERY 2.5 engine from 2002-2009 requires a head gasket replacement between 120-150K miles. The engine head gasket costs between $1600-$2000 depending on who does the work not to mention the poor performance and frustration by owners during it's deterioration. Even with a healthy engine, turning the air-conditioning on (especially at altitude) made this car an under-powered pig with mediocre fuel economy. The all-wheel drive is fantastic but they're not the only car company producing them now. I bought mine brand new for $24K and sold it for $300 after the manual transmission failed (a rebuilt one with installation would have cost more than the car was worth). I think Subaru makes a good vehicle but, I think this head gasket problem found in a 5-8 year run of these 2.5 liter engines wasn't their best work and I would recommend staying away unless you're a mechanic or really into Subarus.Read less

"I love to love this car"

Exterior/interior astethics, cold weather package
2.5l is a little sluggish but not a deal breaker
I bought my 02 outback limited for 2k (originally asking $2900, my uncle is good with negotiating) with 124k and all the work put in, new seals, shafts, headgaskets, belts etc. I absolutely love the duel sunroof, heated leather seats, wooden dash panel, and the aesthetics of the 00-04 models best. My only real complaint on the 2.5l is the delay in acceleration, but speed and performance was not why I purchased this car. Its the BEST family car for my son (who loves to look at out his own moon roof) + a dog who sits in the large trunk space, great for large shopping trips too. I LOVE the two-tone color w/ the lower half being plastic so it doesnt look like a rust bucket. I actually get alot of compliments on how new and nice is looks compared to newer cars. I've previously owned a 94 legacy wagon that had over 300k, but I am just so in love with the simplicity and modesty of my 02 outback. I sincerely hope this car lasts me for many years, and if not, I'll be buying another outback probably of a similar year, since I truly am in love with the 2nd & 3rd generation outback. Ive owned many cars, and this one is the best so far. I just want to love this car and do! Cant speak highly enough about this car.Read less

"Best vehicle I've ever owned...."

Other than maintenance, I've never had this car in the shop... Wish they still made them as good.

"Skip the hype"

heated seats, hidden compartments
minuscule parts that cost $800
Ended up replacing about everything in the car after having it only a year, then the catalytic converters (there's 3, for whatever reason) went out, and there's a small part that needs to be ordered from the Subaru factory that's about $800. And NY state requires converters to be CARB certified, which means they're more expensive, of course. I'm done with this brand.
