- The entry-level version of Mercedes-AMG’s electric tourer hits 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.
- The 800-volt architecture enables fast DC charge times.
- Range from the 106-kWh battery pack estimated at over 400 miles.
Mercedes-AMG’s electric future just got more accessible. The 2027 AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe debuted today, following the launch of the GT 55 and GT 63 in May.
What Is the AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe?
As the oxymoronic name implies, the redesigned grand touring car has four doors, which means it’s not a coupe. It has a curving, coupe-like roofline, however, similar to how Mercedes sells a GLE Coupe SUV with four doors and a fastback roofline.
Unlike its predecessor, the AMG GT will not have an actual 2-door coupe variant. It also lacks an engine or a plug-in hybrid performance model. Instead, the latest generation is all electric.
Unlike the GT 55 and GT 63, the GT 53 uses two permanently excited synchronous motors instead of three. One motor powers each axle, for standard all-wheel drive (AWD), and the smaller front motor disengages when it’s not needed, effectively turning the grand tourer into a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicle.
Combined, the motors make 536 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. It goes from zero-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, unless accounting for a one-foot rollout that slashes the 60 mph time to 3.4 seconds. Not too shabby for an “entry-level” car. Coupe. Sedan. Thing.
A 2-speed transmission is another outlier in the EV space. The main gear enables powerful, sustained acceleration, while the second gear allows for more efficiency at higher speeds. Paddle shifters mimic more gears for drivers to pretend they’re shifting.
Also pretending is the sounds of an AMG inline 6-cylinder engine. Engineers studied the sound of the classic 6-cylinder (why not the venerated V8?) and digitized “every real nuance of the authentic AMG sound character.”
An air-spring suspension with adaptive damping is real and it is standard.
The GT 55 makes 805 hp, while the GT 63 tops out at 1,153 hp and has a blistering 60-mph time of 2.1 seconds. On all three variants, a standard power rear spoiler deploys at higher speeds for downforce and stability.
Consider it a rival to the Porsche Taycan.
What Is the Range of the GT 53?
With its new Formula 1-derived battery technology, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe uses a 106-kWh battery and an 800-volt architecture. That enables charging rates of up to 600 kW, according to Mercedes. If you could find a DC fast charger pumping out that much juice in the U.S., the car could recoupe about 330 miles in just 10 minutes of charging.
Charging at 400-volt stations is no problem, as the GT is designed to convert to 400-volt mode.
Mercedes estimates a range of 497 miles, but that’s on the generous WLTP test cycle in Europe. The EPA equivalent in the U.S. should be in the mid-400-mile range.
How Much Does the AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe Cost?
Pricing will be announced closer to when the GT 53 arrives at dealers early in 2027. The outgoing 2026 AMG GT 53 4-Door cost $114,250, while the range-topping 63 Performance Hybrid topped $200,000. We expect the GT 53 to exceed $120,000.
Unlike the 2026 model, a base GT 43 has not been announced.
