The redesign of the 2016 Honda Pilot has earned that vehicle a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Developed by Honda R&D Americas engineers, this Gen III version of the automaker's midsize 3-row SUV moved up to the top spot in the IIHS rakings on the strength of two major enhancements.

A key change to its front structure helped raise the 2016 Pilot's performance in the demanding small offset front overlap test from Poor to Good. This was coupled with the availability of a new Front Crash Prevention system that the IIHS deemed to be Superior in quality. Included in the Honda Sensing system offered on Pilot EX and higher trim grades, it's joined by include a Collision Mitigation Braking System with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Road Departure Mitigation.
