The 2025 BMW X4 compact luxury SUV adds a dash of style and subtracts a dash of practicality to yield a fun, fantastic machine. Pricing starts at $56,475.
The BMW X4 is the “coupe” version of the familiar X3, the former sporting a more aggressive rake of the roofline that communicates its passion-based appeal. The difference in cargo space is about 12 cubic feet or around 20%, but if you weren’t going to use all that space anyway, the X4 can be more than practical enough. The X4 offers an enjoyable driving experience, plenty of power, and a wide selection of colors, materials, and features to suit your tastes. The X4 M, reviewed separately, offers a similar aesthetic and even more performance.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of compact luxury SUVs, including the BMW X4.
The X4 sees no significant changes for 2025, but big things might be on the horizon. The BMW X3 has been completely redesigned for 2025, so there’s a good chance we could see an all-new X4 for 2026.
The 2025 BMW X4 has a starting sticker price of $56,475, with the range-topping X4 M40i kicking off at $67,875. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $2,299 to $2,539 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

Although there aren’t as many coupe-SUVs in this segment as there are standard SUVs, there’s still a reasonable cohort, including the Audi Q5 Sportback, Infiniti QX55, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, and, to a degree, the Porsche Macan. The BMW X4 is competitively priced in this group, a few thousand dollars above the Audi and Infiniti, on par with the Mercedes, and about $5,000 below the Macan’s starting price.
Before buying a BMW X4, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. The X4’s resale values typically run about average for the segment. Remember, recouping more money when you sell a vehicle can mean a bigger down payment and lower monthly payments on your next one.
The X4 xDrive 30i comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a 248-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder that’s peppy and relatively efficient. This base engine is competitive with the base engines from the competition, although the X4 is nominally the least powerful of the group, with most of the competition between 255 hp and 280 hp. Even so, the base X4 is a fun, sporty compact luxury SUV.
The X4 M40i steps it up with a potent 382-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine augmented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, an adaptive M suspension, and even more performance-tuned electronics than the base model. Quick off the line, blazingly fast, and dynamic in the corners, the X4 M40i is plenty of performance SUV for most people.
The X4 xDrive30i gets 24 mpg in combined driving, while the X4 M40i gets 23 mpg. Those figures mark the X4 as just a tad less efficient than others in the segment, with the Audi Q5 Sportback rated at 25 mpg and the all-wheel drive (AWD) version of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe rated at 26 mpg.
Overall, the X4’s cabin is clear of clutter and high in quality. The front sport seats, covered in perforated SensaTec simulated leather, have that much-loved raised position, plus plenty of lateral support for when those curvy canyon roads beckon. We like it in here and we’re not going to criticize it for having slightly less space than the X3. If we wanted that kind of vehicle, we wouldn’t be hanging around in this corner of the BMW showroom.
Having said that, the X4 doesn’t have quite so much rear passenger space when compared with direct rivals like the GLC Coupe and the Q5 Sportback. Let’s assume this is a non-issue for a potential X4 buyer, but we just thought we’d mention it.
Rear legroom measures 35.5 inches, about an inch less than the X3 and almost three inches less than the Q5 Sportback. The X4 also has around an inch less rear headroom than its X3 stablemate. Likewise, the cargo area is about 12 cubic feet smaller than the X3’s with the rear seats folded. Still, the X4 has 18.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats — much more than the trunk in a 3 Series — expanding to 50.5 when they’re folded down (we like that they split in 40/20/40 fashion for some added versatility). For reference, the Q5 Sportback has 24.7/51.9 cubic feet, and the GLC Coupe has 19.2/52.6 cubic feet.
The fastback SUV look is either going to work for you or not. Anyone reading this with a view to acquiring a new X4 might have already made up their mind about the styling. We say follow your heart’s desires and enjoy something a bit different from most of the other SUVs out there.
Power & Handling
The base X4 xDrive30i may not be the most potent compact luxury SUV, but it still feels quick, and the brawny M40i feels even quicker. Better still, both handle and corner like a BMW should.
Infotainment system
We’ve found BMW’s systems to be intuitive and easy to use. The X4’s 12.3-inch screen-based interface understands voice commands given in natural speech, features Apple CarPlay/Android Auto phone integration, and has an over-the-air update function.
Digital driver information display
Many vehicles are merging their instrument clusters and infotainment touchscreens into one unit. That’s not the case with the X4, but it is still a sharp-looking piece of tech.
Panoramic moonroof
The 2-piece glass panel with powered sunshade helps keep the X4’s cabin feeling open and airy despite the coupe-like roofline.
Harman Kardon audio
This optional 16-speaker/600-watt surround-sound system will have your favorite tunes ringing out loud and clear.
Parking Assistance
Spend an extra $700, and the X4 can practically parallel park itself. This package also includes emergency automatic braking and a 360-degree camera system.
The xDrive30i version of the 2024 X4 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The M40i has a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine augmented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that supplies an extra bump in power for acceleration and smooths out the fuel-saving stop/start function. Output is 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Every X4 comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
BMW’s new vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This coverage is typical among European luxury car marques. Roadside assistance is included for that period, with unlimited mileage. Scheduled maintenance is free for three years or 36,000 miles, which is not so typical.
Safety Ratings
This X4 has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the closely related X3 scored a 5-Star overall rating in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) testing. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring.
