The long established 6 Series Coupe and Convertible offer big power and big personalities, while the 4-door “Gran Coupe” sedan delivers a more practical design without giving up a coupe-like silhouette. Can you find newer designs and more features in an Audi S5, Mercedes E-Class or Jaguar F-Type? Sure you can. But, they won’t carry the blue-and-white BMW Roundel or the unique driving experience only a BMW can deliver.


You'll Like This Car If...

If you’re looking for world-class design, performance and luxury in a coupe that is more reasonably priced than a Maserati GranTurismo or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the 2017 6 Series from BMW should do quite nicely.

You May Not Like This Car If...

For the money, you can get a newer design with all the same characteristics from a BMW 4 Series coupe. An Audi S5 is also just as quick and less costly. If you occasionally need to use the back seat, the coupe’s diminutive quarters preclude it from consideration.

Be it the BMW 6 Series Coupe, 6 Series Convertible or 2017 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe sedan, BMW offers different engine and suspensions for an utterly unique driving experience. The 640i is powered by an exceptional 6-cylinder engine capable of rocketing the car to 60 mph in around five seconds. Move to the 650i, and you’ll find a V8-powered juggernaut -- made to look slow only when placed beside the mighty M6 coupe -- which bolts to 60 mph in just over four seconds. To handle all that power, the 2017 BMW 6 Series cars are equipped with Driving Dynamic Control that permits varied driving styles ranging from Comfort to Sport+. The Sport+ mode allows drivers to test their skills, modifying the transmission shift points and tightening the suspension in a way that transforms this big car into what feels like a nimble roadster.

Favorite Features

If you desire the coupe-like look and feel of the 2017 BMW 6 Series, but practicality says “5 Series sedan,” then the 4-door Gran Coupe may very well be the ultimate compromise.

Music aficionados will love the 6 Series’ Bang & Olufsen audio option. With 1,200 watts of sound pouring from no less than 16 individually amplified speakers, you may never again feel the need to purchase concert tickets.

The 2017 BMW 6 Series interior received a mild upgrade last year, adding a new steering wheel and touch-sensitive iDrive controller to an already complete cockpit. With premium materials everywhere, exquisite fit and finish, wood or carbon-fiber accents, a high-end audio system and supremely comfortable driver's seat, BMW’s 2017 6 Series leaves a lasting impression. Not surprisingly, rear-seat room is tight in the coupe and convertible, but acceptable on Gran Coupes. Trunk space is largely unaffected when the convertible's top is folded.


The recently redesigned nose on the 2017 BMW 6 Series is subtly effective, with the number of vertical bars in each "kidney" now nine instead of 10. The rear end looks menacing when viewed head-on, which is just as it should be. But whether you choose Coupe, Gran Coupe or Convertible, a 6 Series boasts an athletic profile, defined by a long hood and a striking crease that's nearly the length of the body. M6 models emphasize aggressiveness with bigger 19-inch wheels, LED headlights and a unique rear diffuser under the bumper.

Notable Standard Equipment

As one of BMW's higher-end models, the base 6-cylinder 2017 640i Coupe comes very well-equipped with leather and wood inside, xenon headlights, a navigation system with 10.2-inch display and touch-sensitive iDrive controller, dynamic cruise control and rearview camera. A new 650i adds a V8 engine, along with even softer Nappa leather, 20-way-power front seats, 19-inch wheels and a 12-speaker/500-watt audio system. BMW 6 Series xDrive models offer all-wheel drive, and all BMWs offer four years or 50,000 miles of scheduled maintenance.

Notable Optional Equipment

While there are stand-alone options like all-wheel drive available for BMW’s 6 Series for 2017, most of the desirable upgrades are divided into packages. An Executive Package adds ventilated front seats, soft-close doors and a futuristic head-up display that projects travel information onto the windshield so you can focus on the road. Definitely get the wonderful Bang & Olufsen sound system, and performance-minded drivers should check out the active steering and Adaptive Drive. The Black Accent package adds high-gloss black trim on the grille and interior trim, black tailpipes, bi-color 20-inch alloy wheels, and black Nappa leather.

Under the Hood

Three engine options tempt prospective BMW 6 Series buyers. The 640i gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that makes a robust 315 horsepower. The 650i gets a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that puts out 445 horsepower. The truly power hungry will gravitate to the 560-horsepower version of that engine in the M6. The 640i and 650i use an 8-speed automatic transmission, with either rear- or all-wheel drive (RWD, AWD). M6 variants use a 7-speed automatic or 6-speed manual and are rear-drive only. To save on its thirst for premium fuel, the 2017 BMW 6 Series uses auto start/stop to cut engine power at idle.

Pricing Notes

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the base 2017 BMW 640i undercuts some of its competition, but $78,600 -- including the $950 destination charge -- is still some serious coin. If you want a V8 engine, you'll be looking at nearly $90,000. The 4-door Gran Coupe adds about $2,000, and the convertibles add about $7,000. Want all-wheel drive? Add another $3,000. Options inflate the price quickly, and it's not hard to get to six figures, especially with M6 models. That said, the 2017 6 Series is at least competitive against cars like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe, and it seriously undercuts cars like the Maserati GranTurismo. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the BMW 6 Series. Long-term resale value should be about the same as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe, but lower than an Audi S5.
