The Subaru Legacy is a midsize sedan that’s sometimes overlooked but has a lot going for it. A low price tag, solid resale value, and good fuel economy help make it a smart buy, plus it has the unique benefit of standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on every trim. The Legacy also has a good reputation for favorable safety scores, partially thanks to its many standard driver assistance features. No other sedan in this class has standard AWD, although it’s available on the Toyota Camry, Kia K5, and Nissan Altima.
The Subaru Legacy just got a thorough mid-cycle refresh for 2023. For the 2024 model, the only change is a standard Harman Kardon audio system on the Sport trim, adding to its appeal.
2024 Subaru Legacy pricing starts at $21,500 for the Legacy Sedan 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $26,432 when new. The range-topping 2024 Legacy Touring XT Sedan 4D starts at $27,600 today, originally priced from $39,315.

Before buying a Legacy, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. Subaru Legacy resale value is about average for the segment.
The Legacy’s standard 182-horsepower powertrain gets the job done, but it’s not the segment’s most refined offering. We’ve found it can be a bit noisier than most, and power delivery can be a bit uneven. But it’s nevertheless more affordable and more efficient than the 260-horsepower turbocharged engine option, making it the more popular choice among the two. Still, in this case we feel the upgrade is worth considering.
Looking beyond engine and transmission, the Legacy ranks among the midsize sedan segment’s more comfortable offerings, and its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system rightly makes it a popular choice in the northernmost and elevated areas of the country not immune to traction-compromised road conditions.
The Subaru Legacy boasts a spacious and comfortable interior. We fit comfortably in the rear seats and can confirm that this is an accommodating family sedan. Trunk space is decent but a bit below average for this class.
The design and materials don’t convey the level of refinement increasingly common amongst the competition, but it’s worth remembering the Legacy is on the more affordable side of the midsize sedan segment.
The 11.6-inch touchscreen that comes in all but the base trim has a bit of a learning curve. However, we did get used to it after driving with it for a while, and we appreciate the features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Standard AWD
The Subaru Legacy is the only sedan in its class that comes standard with all-wheel drive on every trim.
EyeSight Driver Assist Technology
Several standard safety features are bundled into the EyeSight Driver Assist system, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.
Starlink Multimedia system
The Legacy comes standard with a Starlink Multimedia system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Most trims get an 11.6-inch screen, SiriusXM, and wireless smartphone connectivity features.
Harman Kardon audio system
The upper trims of the Legacy come with a rich 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Available turbo engine
The optional 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine increases horsepower by 40% (260 hp vs. 182 hp) and improves the driving experience with more effortless acceleration.
Spacious rear seats
The rear seats of the Subaru Legacy have almost 40 inches of legroom. These comfortable back seats are accommodating for kids and adults alike.
The Subaru Legacy is available with two engines, and they both come standard with an automatic transmission (of the “gearless,” continuously variable variety) and all-wheel drive. The base engine is the more fuel-efficient choice, while the turbocharged engine improves driving performance.

EyeSight
Every new Legacy sedan comes with this set of driver aids that includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
Although seeing out of the 2024 Legacy sedan is easy enough, we’d still recommend this feature because drivers are human and occasionally fallible. It’s optional in Premium trim and standard in the higher models.
DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System
This is standard in the Sport and Touring XT versions of the 2024 Legacy midsize sedan. It uses an infrared camera and facial recognition to determine if the driver is distracted or showing signs of fatigue, activating visual and audible alerts if necessary.
