Range Rover impressed us with the redesign and they’re at it again with the new electric powertrain. It’s powerful, has immense presence, and feels more luxurious and quiet than it was before. It’s 800-volt architecture makes for fast charging. Driving feels at once dreamlike and formidable. And yes, it’s a Land Rover, so you can do some off-roading. Its tremendous 627 lb-ft of torque sees to even rocky inclines quickly. It’s as capable as it is elegant, a true showstopper across the board.

For the first time Range Rover buyers can opt for an electric powertrain. The dual motor set up produces a combined 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That’s the most ever torque for a Range Rover. That means you can tow with your Range Rover, up to 5,500 pounds, as well as get into city centers that charge congestion fees for non-EVs. The 800-volt electric architecture is made in England by the folks at JLR. It features a 118.5-kWh battery that can charge from 10% to 80% (or add 125 miles) in 22 minutes on a 350-kW charger.

It’s what strikes you first — the quiet. No engine growls, gurgles, or churns. You are met with tranquility and peace. Which, at just shy of 6,200 pounds, seems surprising. The Range Rover BEV could feel hefty, but given the power behind it, that isn’t the case. It has nice balance and with that large torque number doesn’t drive as large as it appears.

Just because you plug it in, does not mean the Range Rover BEV compromises being a Range Rover. With its standard twin-chamber air suspension it feels decidedly luxurious but can still perform when it rolls off-road. And no, fording water won’t zap you. You can wade in up to 2.9-feet of water.

This Range Rover still gets all the off-road drive modes a gas-powered Range Rover has: rock, sand, and mud. With that 627 lb-ft of torque available to you the instant you put your foot on the throttle, it might be even more capable of climbing than its gas counterpart. It can also tow up to 5,500 pounds.

If driving on pavement gives you a case of the jolly goods, the Range Rover BEV and its instant electric torque can cheerio you from zero-to-60 mph in 4.3 seconds. In the parlance of the chaps across the pond, that’s bloody quick. It’s also NACS compatible, so you can charge at Tesla Supercharging stations.

The most range you’ll achieve will be around 333 miles. We’re glad to see this over the 300 mark, though it doesn’t rise to the occasion of some competitors in the full-size luxury SUV segment.

The Range Rover interior feels luxurious and special. Materials include Ultra Fabrics, a luxurious and comfortable synthetic leather, to a full leather interior. You can get trim materials ranging from rattan wood to metal, or even carbon fiber trim elements that make the interior feel bespoke.

The Range Rover BEV interior looks no different than that of the gas-powered or plug-in hybrid Range Rover. That’s because it’s the same. The MLA platform they all ride on was always intended to accommodate everyone. That means your interior space won’t be compromised.

You can get the V8, 550e or BEV Range Rover with the SV Ultra trim which includes a fragrance system, ceramic switchgear, and those aforementioned Body and Soul seats. And it’s not only the front passengers who feel pampered, but also the second row, who enjoy copious amounts of legroom, headrest speakers, and chairs of which Goldilocks would approve. “When it comes to the best seat in the house, there is no poor relative in the family,” said Ryan Miller, Range Rover Global Products and Services marketing director said.

The Range Rover app can control the vehicle from your phone. You can turn on your heated steering wheel in the dead of winter or check its current charge status. You can schedule your car to charge to take advantage of lower charging rates. If you own a Range Rover, do you need that? Sure, everyone likes saving a little silver.

Body and Soul seats transfer the base vibrations of music not only through the available 21 electrostatic speakers but into your Range Rover’s seats. You can literally feel the music you’re playing under you. In addition, Range Rover introduces that sensation to your feet. A floor plate transfers haptic feedback into your tootsies, too. This feature gives new meaning to having the music in you.

A native route planning feature comes in the navigation system. While this might seem like a no-brainer, it might surprise you how many manufacturers come to market without this. For a first-time EV buyer, this feature should be mandatory. We’re pleased Range Rover includes it here out of the gate.
