Range Rover Goes Electric

Range Rover has raised the curtains on its first electric vehicle (EV), appropriately called the Range Rover Electric. A luxury SUV built in the U.K., the first electric Range Rover promises to be “quieter, more effortless, more responsive, and with more torque than any Range Rover to date.”

The 2027 Range Rover Electric features two 260 kW electric motors generating up to 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, according to the automaker. An estimated EPA range of 333 miles means drivers won’t have to charge on the daily. On a DC fast charger, the Range Rover Electric can go from 10% to 80% in around 22 minutes. That adds 125 miles in approximately 10 minutes. Range Rover Electric drivers will have access to the Tesla Supercharger Network with built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) compatibility.

The Range Rover Electric also includes technology that emphasizes control. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) distributes rear torque from 0% to 100% to prevent loss of traction. Integrated Traction Management (ITM) controls motor speed within 50 milliseconds and manages slip up to 100 times quicker than its gas-powered equivalent, according to Range Rover. ITM works with Single Pedal Mode for smooth, controlled one pedal driving. In true Range Rover style, the electric model can also wade in up to 35 inches of water.

The new Range Rover app keeps drivers connected to their Range Rover Electric, allowing them to activate the heated steering wheel or cabin purification, check to make sure the vehicle is locked, see the charge status, driving range, or the car’s live location. The app can also be used to schedule charging when the vehicle is parked and plugged in.

Over 300 patent applications were filed for the Range Rover Electric, the most for a single vehicle in the brand’s history. ThermAssist heat management system optimizes driving range, charging speeds, as well as battery performance and longevity in extreme temperatures, adding up to 25 miles in range. Range Rover says the vehicle’s Battery Digital Twin provides over 900 diagnostic data points. When coupled with Range Rover’s over-the-air software, vehicles are proactively maintained.

While the Range Rover Electric is an EV, the brand says it is a Range Rover first and foremost. The look of the new EV will have an “unmistakable Range Rover design,” with the addition of a “tailored underbody to maximize motorway range,” according to the brand.
