"The consensus on the Honda Civic is generally that they are stalwartly durable and economical to maintain. Supposedly, if you take of the car--it takes care of you. Although I bought my EX new in 1999, and owned it for almost 16 years, I didn't find it to be extraordinarily reliable. Even though I maintained it meticulously with every recommended service, it only lasted 112k miles before the major, expensive repairs started rolling in (paint job from oxidation, radiator leaked, leaky head gasket, suspension needed work). Cabin comforts were OK for the price--although the AC was weak from day one, and the ride quality was good, but not outstanding. To be frank, from word of mouth, I expected the car to last twice as long as it did. My buddy still has an older (1998) Toyota Camry with 250k miles, that's been more reliable, and is in much better shape, than my '99 Civic. The $2k price tag required for the repair of the head gasket/valve job was the final straw--and had to sell it for almost next to nothing. Overall, the car served me adequately, but I wasn't dazzled. I wouldn't recommend a Civic, nor buy another."
