Americans are rediscovering the joys of the compact car. It’s about time they rediscovered the joys of the best kind of small car — the hatchback.

Sales of small cars have surged this summer as consumers look for something they can afford without heavy compromises on in-car technology. And we’ve long been hatchback supremacists — we love the flexible cargo space and the sporty look when designers get them right.

The Subaru Impreza comes only in hatchback form this year. The Kia K4 is available as a sedan or a hatchback, but many in the KBB editorial room are fans of the latter.

Let’s compare these two practical, affordable cars with a bit of flair.

New for 2026, the Kia K4 Hatchback brings dramatic good looks down to a reasonable price. An optional turbocharged engine lets you match the looks with sporty performance if you want to. It packs a lot of cargo space into a small footprint, which contributes to sharp handling.

K4 Hatchback Highlights

A real automatic transmission and the option of more power: Most manufacturers, including Subaru, have gone to continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) in their small cars. Kia sticks with a real automatic with eight gears. CVTs are efficient and mechanically simple, but purists who love to drive sometimes find them rubbery and feel that they don’t translate power to the wheels with the urgency of real gears. The base engines of these two cars have fairly similar output — 152 horsepower for the Subaru and 147 for the Kia. Both have an optional upgrade to a more powerful engine. But Kia wins that fight with a 190-hp turbocharged powerplant that beats Subaru’s 180 hp max.

More space for passengers and cargo: The K4 beats the Impreza on rear-seat space and cargo space.

10-year powertrain warranty: If you’re the type to keep your next car for a long time, Kia’s incredible 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty can protect you from extensive repairs for twice as long as Subaru’s 5-year/60,000-mile plan.

2026 Subaru Impreza

2026 Impreza Highlights

Subaru went hatchback-only with the latest version of its venerable small car, the Impreza. It offers the virtues Subaru fans expect, such as standard all-wheel drive (AWD), a low-mounted boxer engine for that planted road feel, and strong safety scores. It lacks the visual off-road attitude of the rest of the Subaru lineup, but makes a great choice if foul weather routinely impacts your daily driving.

AWD: Kia doesn’t offer an AWD K4. Subaru doesn’t offer an Impreza without AWD. If you live in the snow belt, at significant elevation, or anywhere where AWD is a boon to safety, the Impreza wins this comparison.

IIHS Top Safety Pick status: The Impreza won the coveted Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Both of these cars earn five stars in government safety testing, but the IIHS is a tougher grader, and the Impreza earns higher marks from it.

Conclusion

The K4’s better long-term value, added space, and potential for spirited driving make it our pick for most drivers in this comparison. The Impreza is also a very good car, and could make more sense if you need AWD where you live.
