Volkswagen is recalling 208,724 vehicles that may have steering rack bolts that can corrode and break. The following models are affected:
- 2018-2019 Volkswagen Atlas
- 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan
- 2019-2021 Audi Q3
A recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that moisture can enter the area around the vehicles’ right steering rack mounting bolt. This can lead to possible corrosion of the bolt, resulting in a fracture of the bolt head.
If the bolt head fractures, the steering rack will be attached by only one mounting point. The steering rack housing could fracture, leading to a loss of steering capability.
A fracture of the affected component is more likely to occur during parking or low-speed maneuvering. Warning signs include rattling or knocking noises from the axle area.
The right steering rack bolt will need to be replaced with a mounting bolt featuring corrosion-resistant polymer coating. This replacement will be free of charge.
