Established by the Chevrolet Volt, range-extending is an automotive hybrid concept that’s beginning to acquire traction across the industry as a practical engineering answer to the challenge of the limited driving range of pure electric cars. This Hyundai concept employs a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine as a generator to replenish the Lithium-ion battery pack that sends juice to the 109-horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels. The i-ioniq is capable of going 74 miles on electricity, with a maximum extended range of 435 miles when the generator kicks in.
