Infiniti Emerge-E Another range-extending hybrid concept, this carbon fiber-skinned mid-engine sports car concept was regarded as one of the dynamite designs of the Geneva show. Each rear wheel is driven by a DC electric motor delivering 201 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is a single speed unit, and the system’s electronic brain can apportion torque between the wheels, thus serving as a differential. A 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine serves as a generator for the battery pack. Pure electric range is limited, just 30 miles, but the extended range function goes to 300 miles total, according to Infiniti. With underpinnings and powertrain technology developed by Lotus, the Emerge-E is more than just a show car. Infiniti claims 0-to-60 mph capability of 4.1 seconds, and plans to build some development mules with an eye toward possible production. |
