- A new report says Ford plans a Bronco-based pickup by the end of the decade.
- A long-rumored 4-door Mustang may also be on the way.
Ford may build a new pickup truck on the bones of the popular Bronco SUV, according to a new report.
Industry publication Automotive News says the new truck will appear “near the end of the decade.”
Variations of Current Cars are Big Business
- Ford has long planned variants of certain models as a business strategy
The report fits with a longstanding Ford plan to focus on special editions and variants of what it calls its “Icons” — vehicles like the Bronco and Mustang that have had purchase in the American imagination for decades. Variants give car shoppers the chance to own something unique and expressive, and automakers the chance to make more money on existing platforms without designing something new from the ground up.
Ford would follow Jeep into the truck-based-on-an-off-roader business. Jeep’s Gladiator, based on the Wrangler, has never been a major seller in the midsize truck field. But since it shares most parts with another vehicle, the company doesn’t need it to be a smash hit.
In keeping with that, AN also reports on another variant of an icon. The company “plans to keep adding new Mustangs, including a four-door variant it showed dealers this summer,” the site reports.

4-Door Mustang Long Rumored, Shown in Sketches
- The 4-door Mustang is nothing new — we’ve seen sketches since 2024
The Mustang sedan has been rumored for years, with the company showing off sketches in 2024 and patenting the name “Mach 4” last year. Ford has been virtually out of the passenger car business since 2019, with only the Mustang currently in production. Another Mustang could be the way back in.
The two are both reportedly gas-powered models. But they’re not a sign that Ford considers gas-powered cars the future. The company has invested heavily in its new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform — a flexible framework that can be used to build electric vehicles (EVs) in many segments. It starts with the 2028 Ford Fathom, a midsize electric pickup with a target price under $30,000.
