BMW recalled 27,720 vehicles across various model years due to potential issues with the connection between the driveshaft and the rear axle differential that could cause the vehicle to lose power or even roll away, in certain circumstances.
The affected models include: 2022-2026 BMW 840i and 840i xDrive; 2021-2023 BMW 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive; and 2024-2026 BMW 750e xDrive. In a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report, BMW states the connection between the drivetrain and the rear differential may be subject to excessive wear over time. This connection is responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the rear wheels.
If this connection is disrupted, it could potentially lead to a loss of power to the rear wheels. In rare cases, it could also cause the vehicle to roll away if the parking brake is not engaged when the vehicle is in park. Each of these issues could increase the risk of a crash; however, BMW said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem that have been reported to date.
BMW advises those with affected vehicles to bring them to dealerships. Technicians will check the connection and, based on their assessment, either apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential. The recall repair will be completed free of charge.
Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified via First-Class mail by Oct. 2.
Millions of cars are recalled, sometimes more than once. While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they don’t always reach everyone.
