Recall Alert: 2023 Subaru Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, Outback

Subaru has issued a recall for about 4,300 cars because their driveshafts can separate, resulting in a loss of drive power.

Affected models include the following:

Subaru tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the mounting surfaces for the bolts that connect the shafts may have been inadvertently painted during the assembly process, which can leave the bolts improperly torqued.

“In the worst case, if both of the center support bolts completely come out due to continuous vibration, the front end of the propeller shaft could separate, increasing the risk of a crash,” Subaru says.

Subaru is aware of no accidents related to the problem discovered during a factory inspection.

Dealers will fix it by cleaning the paint off and installing new bolts to the correct torque.
