Porsche to End Production of Gas-Powered Macan

A Porsche Macan drives on the road.

Porsche will end production of the combustion version of its best-selling Macan SUV this summer, Porsche CFO Jochen Breckner confirmed in a recent earnings call.

Porsche plans to replace the gasoline Macan in 2028 with both gas and hybrid options, though further details are not yet available. While in some markets, the gas-powered Macan may still be available into 2027, the U.S. will see a gap until its replacement, code-named “M1,” enters the scene in 2028.

The electric Macan will remain available in the U.S., but it makes up only a third of its sales. As we reported last year, the current Macan no longer meets European safety standards. Porsche already discontinued the vehicle there, selling it only in the U.S. and other markets outside its home territory.

According to industry publication Automotive News, Macan sales were down overall, but the demand for gas-powered versions is strong in the U.S., likely due to the elimination of the EV tax credit. In the final month of production, Breckner says Porsche will “produce as much as we can” to meet that demand, though supplier parts will determine just how many Macans Porsche can produce.

Both the gasoline and electric Macan are built in Germany. Since 2013, over 1 million Macans have been made.
