Mitsubishi has been teasing the revived Pajero SUV for the last several months. Now, we finally have an official reveal date.
The off-road SUV is marketed globally under the Pajero name but was previously known as the Montero in the U.S. market. It first appeared in North America in 1983, but then Mitsubishi discontinued it in 2006.
Now, 20 years later, we may get a closer look at a Montero comeback in the U.S. when Mitsubishi reveals the all-new Pajero Sept. 2. While specifications remain under wraps, Mitsubishi has revealed several key details that indicate the direction it intends to take with this model.
What Mitsubishi Has Confirmed
Mitsubishi revealed the new Pajero will ride on a ladder-frame (body-on-frame) chassis, a departure from the unibody construction used by many SUVs today. This foundation is ideal — and popular — for rugged off-road vehicles because it offers higher towing capacity, greater durability under heavy loads, and improved resistance to rough terrain.
However, these vehicles typically sacrifice some ride comfort and efficiency for the sake of enhanced off-road capabilities or long-term durability.
Mitsubishi also highlights its Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system as a core feature of the Pajero. It’s already available on other Mitsubishi SUVs and helps manage traction and stability by adjusting power delivery and braking.
In July, Mitsubishi released a teaser of the updated Multi Meter. The new digitized version is a callback to the feature that was iconic to the Pajero. It will display specs such as altitude, compass heading, ambient temperature, and lateral torque distribution.
It seems Mitsubishi intends to preserve the Pajero’s reputation as an off-road vehicle while also highlighting the comfort features it’s added to the model. The teaser materials suggest the automaker wants to balance rugged capability with daily comfort in the new-age Pajero.
What We Don’t Know Yet
However, Mitsubishi has not yet released any powertrain details for the Montero in the U.S. We also do not have information on pricing, fuel economy, or towing capacity. However, we expect these details will come to light at the September reveal.
While many key details remain unknown, those looking for an adventure-focused SUV will want to keep an eye out for future announcements. We will report any new information as Mitsubishi releases it.
