The new Kia Proceed Concept previews what’s in store for the Korean auto maker’s Cee’d lineup of sporty compact cars. The Proceed features a long roof design which blends with a muscular lower body and compact footprint. The sculpted body sides also feature a unique Sharkblade C-pillar, which emphasizes the floating roofline and B-pillarless hardtop design over the four conventional doors.

“With many European drivers now seeking performance alternatives to the three-door hot hatch style, we begin thinking about a different halo model for the Cee’d family,” said Gregory Guillaume, chief designer for Kia Motors in Europe. “The Proceed Concept represents a bold new vision of how the vibrant soul of the Pro_Cee’d [a 3-door hot hatch in the Cee’d lineup] could be reincarnated and revitalized for a new generation of performance-oriented drivers.”

This larger variant is more of a cross between a 5-door hatchback and outright sport wagon. The interior reflects this more grown up approach to the genre with hand-tailored rippled black fabric to upholster the seats. This look is contrasted with hand-painted satin lining the doors and flowing into the foot wells. On the dash, knobs and controls are made of knurled aluminum.

Luminline illumination

Daytime running lights give the Proceed a distinct Kia identity and are complemented by additional illumination to highlight the car’s fastback profile. Guillaume explained that “This inspired us to take a step further and develop what we call the ‘Luminline’–an illuminated outline of the Proceed concept’s glasshouse that greets drivers as they approach the car. This serves as a powerful nocturnal visual identifier when the car is on the move.”

Further tactile and visual highlights include atmospherically backlit headlamps in red, stacked rear air vents, and large six-spoke, 20-inch alloy wheels with central locking nut. The rippled surface of its rear light strip is inspired by molten ferromagnetic metal.

Its stance and proportions may be new, but the Proceed Concept features many of Kia’s now familiar design motifs. The iconic ‘tiger nose’ grille, the sculpted ‘island’ bonnet inspired by the Stinger, the castellated windscreen, the full-length roof glazing, and Kia’s inimitable mix of curvaceous sheetmetal and taut creases. Each element singles out the Proceed Concept as a truly modern Kia.
