Quick, what’s the most American car?
If you said a Ford Mustang GT with a V8, a manual transmission, a baseball cap rack, and a hankerin’ for a bacon cheeseburger, congratulations. A couple of your choices are odd, but you’re on the right track.
The American University Kogod Business School has released its annual Made in America index, rating the percentage of parts used in each car that comes from the United States or Canada.
The iconic pony car tops the list. In V8-powered GT form with a 6-speed stick, it uses 88.5 percent American and Canadian parts. Buy it with an automatic transmission from Mexico, and you’ll slip to tenth. Several cars appear more than once, thanks to different configurations that use parts from different sources.
Second on the list, naturally, is the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The Tesla Model 3 rounds out the top 3.
Thanks to a host of ties, there are 21 cars on the school’s top ten list. Seventeen of them come from U.S.-based companies. Honda placed four of its models.
A chaotic year with worldwide supply chain issues has shaken up the list, as automakers have been forced to source parts from unusual places. Last year’s winner, for instance, was the Ford Ranger. This year, the Ranger dropped to 16th on the list as Ford has gotten creative sourcing parts from other countries to keep Ranger production up.
