The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has just published its latest and most comprehensive mileage ratings for 2013 vehicles and while several newcomers have staked out primo spots in the standings, there’s no shortage of familiar faces among the various leader boards in class. As expected, the Electric/Range-Extended set heads the overall rankings with the number one spot going to the Scion iQ EV on the strength of its 121 MPGe combined rating. Rounding out the Top 10 in this ultra-green realm are the Honda Fit EV (118 MPGe), Mitsubishi i-MiEV (112 MPGe), smart fortwo Electric Drive coupe/cabriolet (107 MPGe), Ford Focus Electric (105 MPGe), Tesla Model S with 60kWh battery (95 MPGe), Tesla Model S with 85kWh battery (89 MPGe), CODA Automotive CODA (73 MPGe) and the Chevrolet Volt (62 MPGe). Conspicuous by its absence is the 2013 Nissan LEAF. While Nissan has yet to release specs on the 2013 model that’s based on an updated LEAF variant already on sale in Japan, it’s expected to earn at least a slightly better number than the 99 MPGe combined rating of the 2012 model.
On a more accessible/higher volume level, conventional gasoline-hybrids saw their ranks once again topped by the 2013 Toyota Prius and Prius C, both notching a 50 mpg EPA combined mark. Filling out the 3-10 spots in this roster are the Ford C-Max Hybrid (47 mpg), Ford Fusion Hybrid (47 mpg), Lincoln MKZ Hybrid (45 mpg), Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid (45 mpg), Honda Insight (42 mpg), Lexus CT 200h (42 mpg), Toyota Prius V (42 mpg) and the Lexus 300h (40 mpg).
Leading the non-hybrid contingent is the gasoline-powered 2013 Toyota iQ with a 37 mpg combined number. It’s followed by the smart fortwo coupe/convertible (36 mpg) and a cadre of turbodiesel offerings that include the VW Passat TDI with 6M transmission (35 mpg), Audi A3 TDI (34 mpg), Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sedan and Sport wagon-the latter only with a 6-speed manual transmission (34 mpg), the autoshifted VW Passat TDI (34 mpg), Volkswagen Beetle TDI (32 mpg) and the Beetle Convertible TDI with manual transmission (32 mpg).
