Earlier this year, Hyundai made national headlines and issued a recall after a young child died in a Palisade SUV with potentially defective power-folding third-row seats. Now, Cadillac Vistiq SUVs are facing the same type of recall, though no one has been hurt in this case.
General Motors has recalled 14,540 Vistiq vehicles from model years 2026 and 2027 due to the issue.
In a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the company states that the third-row seats fold with only the push of a button. But, “the seatback stops and does not automatically reverse if it encounters an obstruction in the seat,” the filing says.
This could be extremely dangerous for children. If they become trapped under the seat, the risk of injury increases.
Engineers discovered the problem in testing when a folding seat stopped, but did not reverse, trapping a box, not a human. The company tells NHTSA it “is aware of 6 other incidents or complaints potentially associated with this condition. None resulted in injury.”
GM’s Fix
General Motors dealers will resolve this issue by replacing the folding third-row seat module. The new module will automatically return the seat to its upright position if it comes into contact with anything that would prevent it from folding.
Until replacement parts are available, dealerships and owners who wish to do so can have the third-row folding feature disabled.
Owners with affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting Aug. 3, 2026. When the updated parts are ready, General Motors will provide additional details to affected owners. As with all recalls, the fix is free.
Checking for Recalls
Manufacturers issue wave after wave of recalls that affect millions of drivers. While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they don’t always reach everyone.
