BMW has issued a recall affecting 720,796 cars because an improperly sealed circuit in their water pumps can lead to a short circuit and a vehicle fire.
The recall applies to some, but not, all examples of the:
- 2012-2015 X1
- 2014-2016 2 Series
- 2012-2016 3 Series
- 2014-2016 4 Series
- 2012-2016 5 Series
- 2012-2016 Z4
- 2013-2017 X3
- 2015-2018 X4
- 2016-2018 X5
The company tells federal safety officials that “insufficient sealing” can let water into an electrical circuit in the cars’ water pumps. If water triggers a short circuit, it could lead to an engine fire.
Dealers will fix the problem by inspecting the water pump and, if necessary, replacing it. They’ll also install a shield to prevent water from dripping onto the component in the first place.
