Mercedes-Benz’s flagship electric sedan is receiving new technology and performance updates for the 2027 model year. The EQS sedan saw few changes for the 2026 model year, but 2027 brings more range, quicker charging, and available steer-by-wire technology, among other updates.
Extended Range, Faster Charging
Many internal changes have been made to improve the EQS’ driving capabilities, according to Mercedes-Benz. The 2027 model features an updated, larger battery that increases the electric range to 925 km (WLTP). That would translate to approximately 492 miles, but the Euro figures are often more generous than those yielded in U.S. testing, so we’ll have to wait for the official EPA rating. Whatever the case, it appears to be an impressive number.
Not only do you get longer drive times, but your charging time has also been reduced. The battery has been upgraded to 800 volts, enabling charging up to 350 kW (up from 265 kW on the current model). Mercedes says the car can add up to 320 km of range (WLTP), or approximately 170 miles, in 10 minutes.
Technology Updates
One notable technology update is the option of a steer-by-wire system, making Mercedes-Benz the first German car manufacturer to offer it in a production vehicle. Steer-by-wire technology uses sensors and electronic signals, which enable the electric motors to turn the wheels accordingly.
For a driver, this means that the steering is much more responsive and there’s less vibration transmitted through the steering wheel. Reduced effort is required to turn the wheel and control the vehicle, especially when parking or maneuvering. Steer-by-wire also enables a more programmable steering feel that can be tuned for different driving scenarios.
A yoke wheel option accompanies this technology to support the system and make the fine-tuned steering feel more natural.
Along with this optional steering tech come updates to the vehicle’s internal technology. The EQS continues to use the MBUX Hyperscreen, which integrates the brand’s AI‑enabled system across the entire width of the dashboard. The Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) also receives an update, so the AI assistant’s capabilities may be improved even further.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS is set to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the second half of this year. Pricing is expected closer to launch, but for an idea, 2026 versions of the car start at just over $100,000. Also note that Mercedes-Benz has not released exact specifications for U.S. models, so those coming here may have different features and options. We will provide updates as they become available.
