Acura is unveiling its latest concept vehicle this week at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey, California. We got an early look last month at Acura Design Studios in Torrance, California. The Nexera Vision concept is a sports coupe that introduces a new design language for future Acura models. Still, many Acura enthusiasts have one question: “Is this a new NSX?”
Acura revealed the concept as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Creative Director and Vice President of Auto Design Yasutake Tsuchida led the project.
“We are using the 40th anniversary of Acura as a springboard to our future, with the Acura Nexera Vision serving as the design language for future Acura models,” Tsuchida said.
Dramatic Doors and Lighting
The Nexera makes an immediate impression with its matte titanium finish, bold butterfly doors, and diagonal lighting accents. A closer look reveals active aerodynamics, forged carbon trim, a wide stance, and 22-inch center-lock wheels with massive Brembo brake calipers.
The dramatic doors and sleek body draw attention, but the lighting may be the Nexera’s most production-ready feature. Acura based the new lighting signature on its “A” logo. Thin diagonal headlights and taillights stay hidden until they illuminate, creating what Acura calls “phantom lighting.”
“We challenged ourselves to create something that could only be Acura,” Tsuchida said. “This is not just lighting. It is the expression of the brand itself.”
Acura plans to bring the lighting design to future production vehicles, beginning with the fourth-generation RDX hybrid SUV, which was also on display.
According to Nexera Vision Exterior Design Lead Ben Davidson, “The SUV prototype is our first one that you’ll see details transferred to, and the most prominent feature that has translated is the lighting signature.”
Nexera Powertrain
The Nexera moved under its own power during the preview, though only at low speed and indoors. Acura shared few details about the powertrain. However, the flat floor, open cabin layout, and lack of exhaust strongly suggest an electric vehicle. The storage area behind the seats also rules out a mid-engine layout.
Still, it’s important to remember that the Nexera is a concept car. Acura may never develop a fully functional production powertrain for it.
Driver-Focused Interior
Inside, the Nexera focuses on performance. A symmetrical cockpit surrounds fixed-position seats integrated into the floor. This setup lowers the driver’s center of gravity. Adjustable pedals and a movable steering wheel adapt to different drivers.
The dashboard features a clean design and a single curved display behind a Formula 1-inspired steering wheel. A narrow, dart-shaped center console runs between the seats. Acura also uses sustainable materials, including recycled aluminum, recycled-polyester Alcantara, and CircuLeather.
“The interior is centered around the driver,” Tsuchida said. “It’s about creating a strong connection between driver and machine.”
More Than a Show Car
The Nexera Vision may be a concept, but Tsuchida sees it as the first step in a larger design transformation.
“Nexera Vision sets the course for the next generation of Acura design,” he said. “We are committed to evolving that direction with clarity, consistency, and purpose across future Acura products.”
Not an NSX, but Perhaps Something Bigger
The Nexera is clearly not a new NSX. However, it could prove even more important to Acura’s future. When asked whether Acura might build a production sports car inspired by the concept, Davidson offered little detail.
“This will function as a vision model, as a North Star,” he said.
