Engineered to raise heart rates and styled to turn heads, the 2025 BMW X4 M is a no-holds-barred performance machine of the first order. Pricing starts at $80,275.
The 2025 BMW X4 M is a high-performance compact luxury SUV with coupe styling and serious track capability. Pricing starts at $80,275.
Although it shares its core architecture with the BMW X3 and X4 (both reviewed separately), the X4 M is an altogether different beast in practical terms thanks to its massive power output, performance-focused spec sheet, and obvious form-follows-function aesthetic differences. Despite the focus on extreme road and track performance, the X4 M can also be a practical daily driver.
If you’re shopping for exceptionally sporty, coupe-like SUVs, then consider the X4 M. In addition to its driving prowess, the X4 M also comes with the latest tech, advanced safety features, and the quality and prestige associated with the BMW roundel.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and researching this generation of compact luxury SUVs, including the BMW X4 M.
Since BMW launched the X4 M for the 2020 model year, it hasn’t tinkered with it much, and 2025 is no exception. It returns virtually unchanged.
The 2025 BMW X4 M has a starting sticker price of $80,275.
MSRP | KBB Fair Purchase Price (national avg.) | |||

With its starting price just above $80,000, the X4 M is about 10% more affordable than its closest direct competitor, the Porsche Macan GTS, and about 10% more expensive than the slightly lower-performance Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe. Adding the Competition package adds $7,000 to the X4 M’s price, and with the $2,250 Executive package and $1,700 driver assistance package, the X4 M can be optioned beyond the $90,000 mark. Flanking the X4 M in the BMW lineup are the X3 M and the X5 M.
Two mainstream variants of the X4 are available, plus the high-performance X4 M. BMW says the 473-hp X4 M can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in a fleeting 3.9 seconds.
We also found that it’s completely in its element on a racetrack, which is a rare ability for an SUV. With a 50/50 front/rear weight balance, the X4 M is designed to handle and transfer weight like a high-performance sports sedan.
The Competition package adds another 30 hp, sportier front seats, and an even more spine-tingling exhaust system.
Fuel Economy
The 2025 BMW X4 M and X4 M Competition get the same 17 mpg combined driving fuel economy rating, with 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway ratings. That’s somewhat below the 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city/22 mpg highway) rating of the Porsche Macan GTS, and even further below the 21 mpg combined (18 mpg city/24 mpg highway) of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe.
Overall, the X4 M’s cabin is clear of clutter and high on quality. Covered in perforated simulated leather, the front sport seats have that much-loved raised position, plus plenty of lateral support for when those curvy canyon roads beckon. We like the cabin and we’re not going to criticize it for having slightly less space than the X3 M. If we wanted that kind of vehicle, we wouldn’t be hanging around in this corner of the BMW showroom.
Having said that, the X4 M doesn’t have quite so much rear passenger space when compared with direct rivals like the Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe, but it is on par with the Porsche Macan GTS. We assume it’s probably a non-issue for a potential X4 M buyer, but we just thought we’d mention it.
Rear legroom measures 35.5 inches, about an inch less than the X3 M and almost three inches less than the Q5 Sportback. The X4 M also has around an inch less rear headroom than its X3 stablemate. Likewise, the cargo area is about 12 cubic feet smaller than the X3 M’s with the rear seats folded. Still, the X4 M has 18.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats — much more than the trunk in a 3 Series — expanding to 50.5 when they’re folded down (they split in 40/20/40 fashion for some versatility). The Q5 Sportback and GLC Coupe have a bit more cargo room.
The fastback SUV look is either going to work for you or it’s not, and the X4 M takes the look to an extreme. Those reading this with a hankering to acquire a new X4 M might well have already made up their mind about the styling. We say follow your heart and enjoy something a bit different than most of the other SUVs out there.
Power & Handling
With 473 hp on tap, 50/50 weight distribution, advanced adaptive M suspension, and a range of programmable aids and modes, the BMW X4 M is a demonstrably fast, fun vehicle to drive with few true rivals in its class.
Infotainment system
We’ve found BMW’s systems to be intuitive and easy to use. The X4’s 12.3-inch screen-based interface understands voice commands given in natural speech, features Apple CarPlay/Android Auto phone integration, and has an over-the-air update function.
Digital driver information display
A lot of vehicles are merging their instrument clusters and infotainment touchscreens into one unit. That’s not the case with the X4; however, we think this thing is still a sharp-looking piece of tech.
Panoramic moonroof
In our test drive, we found that the fully automatic, two-piece glass panel with interior powered sunshade helps keep the X4’s cabin feeling open and airy despite the confining, coupe-like roofline.
Harman Kardon audio
Love to listen to music? This optional 16-speaker/600-watt surround-sound system will have your favorite tunes ringing out loud and clear.
Parking Assistance
We argue that it’s $700 well spent to get the X4 steering itself into and out of parallel parking spaces. This package also includes emergency automatic braking and a 360-degree camera system.
The X4 M has a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine like the related X4 M40i, but without any mild-hybrid (MHEV) additions. In the regular X4 M, it develops 473 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. The X4 M Competition package increases that to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Every X4 comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
BMW’s new vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is typical among European luxury car marques. Roadside assistance is included for that period, with unlimited mileage. Scheduled maintenance is free for three years or 36,000 miles, which is not so typical.
Safety Ratings
The 2025 X4 hasn’t yet been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the closely related X3 has scored 5 stars in NHTSA testing. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
