2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid: Lowest Cost to Own Among Hybrid Cars

Predicted 5-Year Cost to Own: $30,918

Anybody keeping an eye on their budget will tell you that knowing that their car gets more than 50 miles per gallon of fuel is a great way to keep cost-to-own on that car low. When that car is also a Toyota, with historically strong resale value plus a reputation for quality and reliability, the positive case for its 5-year cost to own even harder to ignore. Cue the 5-passenger 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid sedan.

While the initial pricing for the hybrid version of any vehicle will cost more than the non-hybrid version of the same trim, the Corolla Hybrid — coming in LE trim only — starts at a relatively accessible $23,880. For that, the Corolla Hybrid gives you LED headlights and taillights, color-keyed mirrors and door handles, automatic climate control, premium interior materials, Smart Key keyless entry with push-button start, and a high-definition 7-inch infotainment display.

The car’s safety regimen includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes low-speed automatic braking with pedestrian detection and full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

As a performance car, the compact hybrid’s gasoline/electric powertrain with a continuously variable automatic transmission only offers 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque, but we only dinged it softly in our Expert Review. “The Corolla Hybrid does feel down on power compared to its conventional counterparts, but the instantaneous torque from the electric motor gives it acceptable off-the-line acceleration around town. Its handling is closer to the standard L and LE models than the slightly sportier SE and XSE, and its fuel economy is outstanding.”

In every way, from the 53/52-mpg city/highway fuel economy to its podium finish in our 2020 Best Resale Value Awards, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid possesses power as a low-cost-to-own leader.
