SUVs overtook station wagons in popularity long ago, but that doesn’t mean the luxury wagon is dead. The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a unique luxury car with SUV-like versatility and sedan-like driving dynamics. It also carries the brand’s reputation for safety with the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.
With standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and 8.3 inches of ground clearance, this wagon can handle just about any road condition and even venture off-road. The V90 Cross Country has two main competitors, and they’re both more expensive: the Audi A6 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.
2023 Volvo V90 Pricing
2023 Volvo V90 pricing starts at $40,400 for the V90 B6 Plus Cross Country Wagon 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $59,495 when new. The range-topping 2023 V90 B6 Ultimate Cross Country Wagon 4D starts at $38,900 today, originally priced from $65,095.

Driving the Volvo V90
The Volvo V90 Cross Country’s driving character is somewhere between a sedan and an SUV. The ride height is greater than that of an average sedan, but it’s more agile with less body roll compared to an SUV.
The “twincharged” (supercharged and turbocharged) 4-cylinder engine under the hood probably won’t wow you, but it’s more than sufficient for everyday driving. Acceleration is respectably quick, and the V90 is powerful enough for stress-free highway passing. It’s worth noting that the two main rivals of the V90 Cross Country — the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedez-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon — have more powerful engines.
The on-road comfort in this wagon is impressive. The compliant suspension makes for a comfortable ride, and it gets better if you opt for the optional adaptive air suspension. The comfortable seats and quiet cabin make for a serene ride.
The off-road capabilities of the V90 Cross Country are pretty good for a luxury car with this level of comfort. It’s not an extreme off-roader by any means, but standard AWD and 8.3 inches of ground clearance make this Volvo wagon good for snowy roads and mild off-roading.
Interior Comfort
The interior of the Volvo V90 Cross Country is roomy and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is excellent, and these are some of the most comfortable seats you’ll find anywhere. It gets nicer in the Ultimate trim with luxuries like Nappa leather seats, a head-up display, and a crystal shifter.
The seating space in this wagon is generous, and you can comfortably seat up to four adults, with total room for five. You get more cargo space than in the average sedan, but in this department, the V90 Cross Country falls a bit short of its rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Exterior Styling
The Volvo V90 Cross Country strikes an excellent balance between premium and rugged. The wagon body makes it unique, and the headlights and taillights are distinctly Volvo. The Ultimate trim ups the style factor with standard 20-inch wheels and optional 21-inch matte-black wheels.
The size of the V90 Cross Country is almost identical to the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon. It’s like a midsize luxury sedan but with a wagon body.
Favorite Features
1. Versatile wagon body
You don’t see a lot of station wagons on the road these days, but the V90 Cross Country carries the torch of the old-school Volvo wagon. On top of making a fashion statement, the versatile wagon body gives it more cargo space than the average sedan.
2. Luxurious interior
The roomy cabin of the Volvo V90 Cross Country uses a premium design and top-notch materials. Leather seating is standard, and if you upgrade to the Ultimate trim, you get luxuries like Nappa leather upholstery, massaging front seats, a head-up display, and even a crystal shifter.
3. Off-road capability
Standard AWD and 8.3 inches of ground clearance make the V90 Cross Country more adventurous than the average luxury car. It can tackle just about any road condition and is up for some mild off-roading. The V90 Cross Country is a great luxury car for snowy climates.
4. Class-leading safety
Volvo continues its reputation for building some of the safest cars on the market, and the V90 Cross Country is no exception. It’s an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with excellent crash-test results and a long list of standard safety features like the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system, blind-spot monitoring, road sign information, and much more.
5. Adaptive air suspension
This optional feature for the V90 Cross Country makes this wagon both sportier and more comfortable. Glide over the road in Comfort mode and tighten up the handling in Sport mode depending on the driving conditions. It also automatically adjusts the car’s ride height.
6. Google Built-In
The Google-based infotainment system in the Volvo V90 Cross Country is a little different, but it’s intuitive once you get past the learning curve. It has handy tools built-in like Google Maps and Google Assistant. Apple CarPlay also comes standard.
Engine & Transmission
The Volvo V90 Cross Country has one engine option. It’s a 4-cylinder that’s both turbocharged and supercharged, plus it has a mild-hybrid system that slightly improves performance and efficiency. It has standard AWD and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
