"18 years, 190,000 miles, still feels new.
Very comfortable for long distance driving, downright luxurious for commuting. I love the simple interior design, convenience and practicality. Handles well, good in the snow, and of course Volvo safe.
What more could you ask for a car?
I take care of my cars and keep them a long time. Forty years of driving, this is my third car. Complaints about reliability from people who replace cars every few years tells me they abuse or do not maintain the ones they have.
Occasionally things break or wear out. I fix or replace them. Price for repairs probably higher than for some other manufacturers, but at 190k I am so far ahead financially that it is silly to complain.
Reluctant to recommend an 18 year old car to anyone unless they know it has been properly maintained.
I will keep this until it can no longer be repaired.
Then I will buy another Volvo."
"I bought this 1993 850GLT new. It has only 85600 miles. As others say, the repairs can be expensive. I have had some pblms; ie, A/C control panel burned out, 2 power window mechanisms failed, SRS power strap had to be replaced but ca. $4000.00 over 15.5 years, not too bad, I think. The major maintenance is every 30K miles and costs about $500.00 but worth it. Take care of it, it will take care of you."
"Mom always told me to avoid used cars like the plague. Well, Mom was wrong. Although I paid a bit much ($5200) for my 1995 GLT wagon, as I bought it from a dealer, I felt more confident with them having given it a clean bill of health. It had only 88K on it at the time, so its life was basically just beginning... The old owners also left the dealer with the complete service records, which didn't seem to include anything out of the ordinary for a 12-y/o car. My only complaint is that the passenger-side airbag cover is peeling back from the dash, but I was told that is a common problem on this model. All in all, this car drives like a dream when compared to my other cars. In fact, I replaced my 2005 Subaru Impreza wagon with this 850, in fact, because the Subaru was cheaply made and not built to withstand hauling a lot of stuff around. If you go to IKEA, you can rest assured that their flat-packed stuff will *definitely* fit in the back of this wagon. I'll find it very hard to buy anything other than a Volvo in the future!"
