2023 Volkswagen Golf R Review

Colin Ryan

Updated May 30, 2025

Colin Ryan specializes in writing about new cars. He has done this for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, Popular Mechanics, Mazda and Lexus customer magazines, plus a bunch of enthusiast sites and publications. And he spent several years as a staff writer at BBC Top Gear magazine. During this zig-zag of a career trajectory, he has driven everything from budget Malaysian hatchbacks (yes, they exist) to scarily expensive Italian exotica.

Pros

  • Driving dynamics
  • Refinement
  • Plenty of standard features

Cons

  • No physical volume/radio controls

What's New?

  • Anniversary editions

If there’s such a thing as the perfect car, the Volkswagen Golf GTI might qualify. It has the power and poise to entertain on all kinds of roads. Yet it also has the refinement and practicality to make it an excellent everyday driver.

The Golf is now in its eighth generation, which debuted last year. The only versions sold in the United States are the GTI and the Golf R. The GTI is awesome, the continuation of a badge and approach that has delighted drivers for decades. The more powerful Golf R is extra awesome and has all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard.

2023 Volkswagen Golf R Pricing

2023 Volkswagen Golf R pricing starts at $40,535 for the Golf R Hatchback Sedan 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $46,635 when new. The range-topping 2023 Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition Hatchback Sedan 4D starts at $36,575 today, originally priced from $47,285.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 Volkswagen Golf R models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Volkswagen Golf R

It isn’t just about power. The 2023 Golf GTI has 241 horses-worth of it, which is easily capable of delivering thrills. Some other hot compacts have more. Yet few can match the fluid handling qualities of a GTI when they turn onto those canyon roads.

Some of this is made possible by ingenious features like the standard electronic limited-slip differential combating understeer (where the front tires gradually relinquish their grip and the front end drifts wide). But these additions complement a well-calibrated chassis instead of compensating for a mediocre one.

We also like the fact that there’s plenty of muscle from 35 mph to 60 mph for effective overtaking moves.

The top GTI trim, Autobahn, and the Golf R both have an adaptive suspension for a greater range between everyday comfort and the precision preferred for committed cornering.

A 315-horsepower engine is in the Golf R, which also has bigger brakes and its own selectable driving modes — including a drift setting for power-sliding antics on a track.

The R’s standard all-wheel-drive system includes a torque-vectoring function for the rear axle. Through curves, the outside wheel is made to go faster than the inside wheel for optimum stability. From behind the steering wheel, it just feels as if the driver has suddenly become more talented.

We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and researching the current collection of hatchbacks, including these VW Golf variants.

Multi-faceted Interior

Supportive front seats, a smart control layout, and a golf ball-inspired shift knob with the manual transmission are so typical of the Golf GTI throughout its history.

Another nod to the car’s heritage is the plaid-patterned cloth upholstery in the S and SE models. Now there’s a modern element with the digital driver information display matched by a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen. We’re not so happy about the lack of knobs for the volume and radio stations, though.

For a compact car, the Golf is roomy in both seating rows. For an enthusiast machine, this hatchback is wonderfully practical. And for cars from a non-luxury marque, both the Golf GTI and Golf R feel decidedly upmarket.

Our Favorite Features and Tech

Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
Like most new cars, smartphone integration is standard in the 2023 Golf. It becomes wireless in the GTI’s SE trim.

Dual-clutch automatic transmission
While it’s great that VW offers a manual transmission to please one section of enthusiasts, it has to be said that this automatic has a shift action faster than any human can muster. And the shift paddles allow the driver to get involved whenever the whim arises.

Driver information display
Every new Golf variant has a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster showing a choice of information. Learning how to use it is easy and quick.

Harman Kardon audio
The cabin of a 2023 Golf is nice and quiet, all the better to enjoy a high-end 480-watt audio system from a company that also supplies BMW.

DCC adaptive suspension
DCC stands for Dynamic Chassis Control. In other words, an adaptive suspension with comfort, normal, and sport modes to suit the moment. This is standard in the 2023 GTI Autobahn trim and the Golf R.

Golf R Special mode
The Golf R has a Special driving mode, the fruit of development time spent on the highly challenging North Loop of the Nürburgring in Germany. Suspension, throttle, and transmission settings are all optimized to handle demanding roads like this famed 150-plus-corner track.

Engine & Transmission

You know how almost everything has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine these days? Volkswagen started it. There are even VW Group 2.0T units in Audi cars, which shows how refined it is.

The version in the 2023 GTI makes 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque on a diet of regular gasoline. The Golf R wants premium gasoline to produce 315 horsepower and either 285 or 295 lb-ft of torque. The bigger number is achieved with the automatic transmission.

Yes, there’s a choice of transmissions. The standard setup in both variants is a 6-speed manual. The 2-pedal option is a 7-speed dual-clutch unit with paddle shifters mounted beneath the steering wheel.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is the sole configuration with the GTI. The Golf R has all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard.

2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (GTI)
241 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm
273 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/32 mpg (manual), 24/34 mpg (auto)

2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (R)
315 horsepower @ 5,900 rpm (auto: 5,600 rpm)
285 lb-ft of torque @ 1,900 rpm (manual)
295 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm (auto)
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/28 mpg (manual), 23/30 mpg (auto)

More Golf fuel economy information is available on the EPA’s website.

4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty

Volkswagen’s new-vehicle warranty, including the powertrain, lasts for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. That’s quite good for the class, since Honda and Toyota have 3-year/36,000-mile warranties. But then they cover their powertrains for 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The first scheduled services, at 10,000 and 20,000 miles or two years, are also part of the deal.

2023 Volkswagen Golf R Safety

2023 Volkswagen Golf R Safety Technology

IQ.Drive

Companies like to have special names for their sets of driver aids. For VW, it’s IQ.Drive and it’s standard in every new VW Golf. It includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, active blind-spot monitoring (where the steering intervenes if necessary) with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

Travel Assist

This is also part of the IQ.Drive array, bringing an element of partial self-driving. The adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping systems work together, making life easier on dull-yet-tiring freeway stretches.

Adaptive front lighting

Fitted to the 2023 Golf GTI SE trim and above, the LED headlights move in conjunction with the steering. The LED fog lights do the same thing.
