Used 2020 Toyota GR Supra

For 2020, the Toyota Supra returns to take its rightful place as the company’s flagship performance sports coupe. The all-new rear-drive GR Supra is a performance dynamo and one that won’t disappoint longtime Supra enthusiasts who have been patiently awaiting its return. Jointly developed with BMW, the new Supra shares much of its most important bits with the BMW Z4. Styling is pure Toyota, with nods to the vintage 1967 2000 GT, as well as the last production Supra and FT-1 Concept. Power is supplied by BMW’s twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 making 335 horsepower, while the suspension and steering are all tuned by Toyota. Taken in their totality, these features create a performance coupe every bit the equal of the Porsche 718 Cayman and Jaguar F-Type, but with a price starting around $50,000.

With its 4.1-second zero-to-60-mph time and 155-mph top speed, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra has what it takes to compete with the world’s best performance coupes, yet its $50,000 price tag opens the door to so many more potential owners. The BMW-sourced 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine delivers its power smoothly and without hesitation, while the 8-speed automatic makes quick work of gear changes in both automatic and manual mode. We do regret the lack of a manual transmission, but the paddle shifters allow the driver to change gears without removing one hand from the wheel, so that’s a plus.

In the corners, the GR Supra’s big 19-inch wheels and electronic rear differential make certain the car remains planted, although when in Sport mode you can easily get the rear wheels to step out, which is always fun. KBB’s Micah Muzio spent a day with the Supra and noted the steering had a tendency to want to pull back to center and that the brake pedal could be a bit firmer. He notes the new Supra makes a great track car, but without a manual-transmission option, it’s not the perfect track car. On the road, the Supra’s ride is firm and the short wheelbase makes for some bouncy motions over less than ideal road surfaces.

Toyota’s Supra for 2020 shares one thing in common with its forebears: a snug cockpit. The handsome interior is awash in leather, Alcantara and high-quality plastics. A dash-mounted touch-screen display provides information for the audio, navigation, smartphone apps and various functions such as exhaust note tuning, suspension settings and, thanks to its BMW roots, wireless Apple CarPlay. The sport seats are fantastic, offering plenty of support without squeezing the life out of regular-size beings. Both driver and passenger enjoy 14-way power-adjustable seats with 4-way power lumbar support, with the driver’s seat getting a memory setting as well.

The new GR Supra derives inspiration from a number of previous Toyota cars, the most notable being the recent FT-1 Concept. Also in the mix are the 4th – generation Supra and the legendary Toyota 2000 GT. The Supra rides on a very short wheelbase some four inches shorter than the compact Toyota 86 coupe. This setup allows for precise handling but also rather ungainly front and rear overhangs. Notable styling cues include staggered 19-inch wheels, 6-lens LED headlights and, on higher trims, red brake calipers. We can’t say we’re big fans of the numerous nonfunctional vents and intakes that adorn the car’s exterior. It sort of reminds us of late 1970s’ American muscle cars with fake hood scoops, side vents and air dams. However, a big thumbs-up goes to the raised decklid that draws inspiration from the 1993 Supra Turbo’s hoop spoiler.

FULL SET OF PERFORMANCE UPGRADES STANDARD
While some manufacturers make you pay more for the simplest upgrades, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra includes all the good stuff as part of its standard-equipment list. Included on every car is an electronic rear differential, adaptive dampers, 13.7-inch front brake discs with 4-piston Brembo brakes and staggered 19-inch wheels.

ELECTRONIC REAR DIFFERENTIAL
The 2020 Toyota Supra’s electronic rear differential does a fantastic job getting power to the ground, most notably when coming out of tight corners or punching the accelerator.

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra comes in three trims, the least expensive of which includes an electronic rear differential, adaptive dampers, 19-inch alloy wheels, smart-key fob with push-button start, heated power-folding mirrors with driver’s-side auto-dimming, active exhaust, rain-sensing wipers, 8.8-inch color LCD gauge cluster, dual automatic climate control, 6.5-inch touch-screen display, 10-speaker audio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and auto high beams. Along with the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 6-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranties is a 2-year/25,000-mile complimentary maintenance plan.

Moving to the 3.0 Premium brings an 8.8-inch wide-format touch screen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, heated leather seats, wireless phone charging, a color head-up display and a 12-speaker 500-watt JBL audio system. The top-end Launch Edition is limited to just 1,500 cars and comes in red, black or white with unique matte-black wheels. Optional on the 3.0 is the 8.8-inch wide-format touch screen, navigation and 500-watt JBL audio. All three trims can be fitted with a Driver Assist Package ($1,195) that brings full-speed adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, a blind-spot monitor, sonar park assist and rear-collision warning.

Power for Toyota’s new 2020 GR Supra comes from a BMW-sourced 3.0-liter inline twin-scroll turbocharged 6-cylinder engine good for 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. Controlling all that power is an 8-speed automatic with manual-shift mode. It’s worth noting that in the Z4 convertible, this same engine makes 382 horsepower, propelling the BMW to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
