A maximum range of up to 310 miles, the latest tech, and a starting price under $40k (if you qualify for the federal EV tax credit) give the Tesla Model Y enough mainstream appeal to be the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States. It’s a winning formula that combines impressive technology with practicality while also delivering an enjoyable driving experience. According to our readers, the Model Y has been subject to build-quality issues and some hassles when trying to get it serviced, but most owners agree that the pros outweigh the cons. The competition is heating up in this segment, but the Tesla Model Y remains a leader in electric SUVs, especially in the bang-for-the-buck factor.

Following the reintroduction of the single-motor Model Y last year, there are no notable changes to this EV for 2024. However, the closely related Tesla Model 3 sedan got a significant update this year with a refreshed exterior and interior, a longer maximum range, and more interior features like a backseat infotainment screen, ambient lighting, and an updated central display. We hope to see a similar refresh for the Model Y soon.

The 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range is powered by a dual-motor electric powertrain with all-wheel drive (AWD). Tesla estimates a brisk 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 135 mph. What we love about electric motors is that they serve up virtually all of their thrust immediately, whereas combustion engines tend to have sweet spots. The Model Y’s chassis is able to handle such power — with precise steering, confident braking, and composed handling.

Some of our consumer reviews have noted a choppy, noisy ride on rough pavement. Sticking with the standard 19-inch wheels helps mitigate this problem.

There’s also a single-motor version of the Model Y available with a perfectly adequate 6.6-second 0-60 mph time. The single-motor Model Y is rear-wheel drive (RWD), so it’s fine if your climate can handle it and you want the most affordable version of this SUV. However, we think the longer range, quicker acceleration, and addition of AWD make the Long Range model a worthwhile upgrade if your budget allows it.

The Performance version’s ability to sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in a rapid 3.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 155 mph may seem like overkill. We think the lower trims make more sense for most buyers, while the Model Y Performance is the enthusiast’s choice.

As for driving autonomy, three different levels are available in the Model Y. The standard Autopilot and available Enhanced Autopilot systems make highway driving nearly effortless. Opting for Full Self-Driving Capability gives you one of the more advanced systems available for autonomy in city driving.

Range and Charging

Unsurprisingly, the Long Range version can travel the longest distance on a single battery charge: 310 miles, as opposed to 285 miles for the Performance trim and 260 miles for the base model. The two lower trims have optional 20-inch wheels that come with a range penalty.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E can beat the maximum range of the Model Y, but just barely, and only in one specific configuration: The California Route 1 eAWD with the extended range battery gets a 312-mile range. That’s the only version of the Ford that gets more than 300 miles of range. The Nissan Ariya and Hyundai Ioniq 5 have maximum ranges of 304 and 303 miles, respectively.

As for charging time, a Tesla Supercharger can add 80% charge in 15-20 minutes. That’s about as good as it gets with this generation of EVs. Using a home charger, a full charge takes 8-12 hours.

The skeletal dashboard in the 2024 Model Y SUV doesn’t do much more than provide somewhere for the 15-inch infotainment touchscreen to go. Most of the relevant cabin functions are accessed through this screen, which does involve a learning curve. Even though most manufacturers are adding Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration into their cars, Tesla does not. The Model Y does allow streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu into its hallowed system, however, to pass the time while the battery recharges. We also think the double wireless phone charging pad is cool.

There are heated seats in the first and second rows. We found the front seats particularly comfortable. Buyers have a choice of standard seating for five or accommodations for seven with an optional third row (power-folding) with extra USB ports.

Naturally, that third row is short on legroom (only 26.5 inches) and headroom. Adults will want to sit as far from it as possible. Legroom in the second row is among the best-in-class, though, at 41.6 inches. The standard glass roof contributes to a general airiness.

Both the second and third rows fold flat to create a useful amount of cargo area. The 5-seater has 72.1 cubic feet behind the fronts; the 7-seater has 67.9. Under the hood is another 4.1 cubic feet of storage space. That’s more cargo space than its closest rivals, with the Mustang Mach-E being the next roomiest.

The Model Y has an aesthetic that is uniquely Tesla. The flat nose and egg-like profile help keep the aerodynamics in check, contributing to this SUV’s impressive range and efficiency. The Performance model brings a subtle yet welcome visual upgrade with a lower stance, 21-inch wheels, and a carbon fiber spoiler. Unfortunately, the Telsa Model Y has been subject to some general build-quality problems. In our consumer reviews, owners have reported issues like paint blemishes and misaligned panel gaps and windows. These are uncommon problems in modern cars from more mainstream brands. Ordering online is getting popular, but we recommend taking a good, in-person look before signing off on final delivery of a Model Y.

Up to 310 miles of range
Other car companies are catching up, but Tesla is still among the best regarding the distance a single battery charge covers. Factor in the Tesla Supercharger network with over 50,000 chargers globally, and the 2024 Model Y will handle city duty and road trips alike.

Semi-autonomous driving tech
The standard Autopilot system bundles increasingly common features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Enhanced Autopilot adds Navigate on Autopilot, automatic lane-changing, automated parking, and Smart Summon. Finally, Full Self-Driving Capability further adds Autosteer on city streets and automatic stop-and-go at traffic lights and stop signs.

15-inch screen
Just about every function of the car is controlled via this vast touchscreen. It has lovely graphics and a user-friendly interface that feels natural once you get used to it.

Available 3-row seating
An available third row of seats adds to the versatility of this electric SUV. This is an uncommon option in this class at this price point, and we’re happy to see it available in the Model Y. It’s best for occasional use by smaller humans.

Exciting Performance model
A lowered suspension, performance brakes, and a stunning 3.5-second 0-60 mph time make the Model Y Performance a genuinely thrilling SUV that’s still practical. The 21-inch Überturbine Wheels, carbon fiber spoiler, and alloy pedals are nice touches, as well.

Sentry Mode
Even a parked Tesla still has a 360-degree camera system in operation and will send alerts to a smartphone. The optional Live Camera function allows owners to check their car’s surroundings, sound the horn, flash the headlights, and even talk through the car’s speaker.

Every variant of the 2024 Tesla Model Y employs an 81 kWh battery pack. The Model Y uses its electric power very efficiently, resulting in low energy costs. Its rivals come close in efficiency and fuel costs, but the Model Y is one of the most efficient electric SUVs.

4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty

Tesla’s basic new-car warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is a common arrangement among luxury cars. The battery in the Model Y is covered for eight years or 120,000 miles. Based on what we read and hear from owners, experiences with the reliability and maintenance costs of Tesla models have been mixed, varying depending on location. If you live somewhere without enough service centers to handle all of the Teslas in the area, you could encounter some headaches when your Model Y needs service.

The Tesla Model Y has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and awarded the maximum five stars overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
