Our 3 Favorite Things About the 2026 Mazda CX-30

If you want the utility of an SUV but the handling of a less practical (more fun) vehicle, the 2026 Mazda CX-30 slots into this narrow but compelling Venn diagram. The small SUV with the agility of a hatchback also crosses over into the premium segment with a refined design and a loaded feature set that includes standard all-wheel drive (AWD). All of this adds up to a premium value, which is our favorite oxymoron.

Here are our favorite features that contribute to this impression.

1. Driving Dynamics

The CX-30 is essentially a taller version of the Mazda3 hatchback, sharing a chassis and engine choices. Those engines are a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or, for about $4,500 more, a 250-hp turbocharged version of that engine (note that Mazda recommends premium fuel to unlock the top horsepower ratings). You don’t need the more potent engine to tap into the driving dynamics of the CX-30. The 6-speed automatic transmission lets either engine rev high, and standard AWD ensures grip at the corners.

New for 2026 is a brake-based limited-slip rear differential, which uses the antilock braking system to stop the loose or spinning wheel, thus rerouting power to the wheels with more grip. This increases both the safety and the balance of the car, so you could push it a bit more. Even though it handles better than rivals and has more power even in the base engine, Mazda uses a pretty basic front-strut/rear torsion-beam suspension setup. Yet the relatively low ride height and good weight distribution make it one of the most fun small SUVs to drive.

Mazda’s trademark sharp steering furthers this impression. It’s not a performance SUV by any means, but for the price it has more verve than competitors.

2. Smooth Design, Inside and Out

With the exception of the larger CX-50, Mazda might be the only automaker not hewing to the big and boxy SUV design trend proliferating through showrooms and boardrooms alike. Instead, the CX-30 rounds into shape with alluring curves and smooth corners. The black cladding covering the bumpers and the round wheel arches can be a bit much in the Subaru way, but its elegant and understated lines cut an alluring profile.

Those traits carry over inside, with a clean dashboard headlined by an available 10.25-inch center display recessed near the windshield. Mazda’s infotainment interface is underwhelming, to say the least, but it encourages your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. If you connect your phone, Mazda’s setup is all you really need. A slim climate panel with dials and buttons keeps the dash clean, and the blend of synthetic and leather materials with chrome accents is a welcome departure from the busy interiors of many new cars.

3. Premium Value

About that value, the base CX-30 2.5 S costs just under $27,500 (all listed prices include the destination fee). Offered in six trim levels, the base engine peaks at just under $35,000 for the 2.5 S Premium. It’s cheaper than the Ford Bronco Sport and Subaru Crosstrek, which also come with standard AWD. Factor in the standard features, which include adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, and it’s a striking deal. We’d recommend at least the $29,155 S Select Sport for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which turns the 8.8-inch display screen into a touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat.

Stepping up to either of the two well-equipped 2.5 Turbo models brings an upcharge of about $4,500 over the base engine, but even at nearly $36,000 for the Turbo Aire or about $39,500 for the top Turbo Premium, it’s a relative value. The Acura ADX starts at $38,450 with AWD, while the Volvo XC40 B4 costs more than $41,000 and the BMW X1 starts at more than $43,000.
