There’s a hatchback comeback underway, and it’s about time for it. Hatchbacks combine the fun-to-drive handling of a low-slung sedan with the cargo space of a small SUV. They’re often less expensive than compact SUVs, too.

The newest entrant in the field is the Kia K4 Hatchback, introduced just this year. It has quickly become a favorite among the Kelley Blue Book staff who’ve driven it.

Here are our favorite features that make the Kia K4 Hatchback a compelling choice at a surprisingly good price.

1. SUV Cargo Space at a Sedan Price

Fold the rear seats down, and the K4 Hatchback gives you 59.3 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s not quite competitive with most compact SUVs, but “not quite” means nearly. But most compact SUVs start at a little over $30,000. The K4 Hatchback starts as low as $26,235, including the delivery fee.

Near-SUV space at a much lower price is a very attractive proposition. Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty only adds to the value — this one won’t shock you with repair bills for a decade.

2. Turbo Option

Not every car shopper cares if their car is fun to drive, but many hatchback buyers do. They’re often shopping in the segment specifically because they want the taut handling of a low-slung compact car but more cargo space than those typically offer.

Every compact hatchback gives you some fun cornering ability. But if you really want to enjoy the drive, Kia has another option for you — a turbocharged engine that bumps horsepower from 147 hp up to 190 hp.

Better yet, GT-Line Turbo barely pushes the price over $30,000.

3. This is a Good-Looking Car

Automakers call their styling choices a “design language.” Kia’s current design language is distinctive, with angular lines and linear lighting Kia likens to constellations. We think the K4 Hatchback may be the best version of this language.

It looks sleek and sporty, though it’s also a practical daily commuter. You can tell Kia is a little in love with the look of this one. They offer it in several dynamic colors, including a particularly eye-catching Sunflower Yellow.

We point shoppers toward the K4 Hatchback for practical reasons, like its long warranty and spacious cargo hold for such a small car. But we might choose it ourselves because it’s better-looking than most of its competitors, and we’d get a bold color.
