Used 2021 Ram ProMaster Window Van

The 2021 Ram ProMaster is a full-size van available with a choice of roof heights, body lengths, and payload capacities. It also comes as a cab/chassis configuration for more specialized duties.

Unlike the Nissan NV, Ford Transit, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the ProMaster deploys front-wheel drive, resulting in good traction in snow. However, unlike the Transit and Sprinter, the ProMaster doesn’t offer the option of all-wheel drive, nor does it offer diesel power or a passenger version.

Instead, the Ram ProMaster van’s particular virtues include a muscular V6 engine as standard, maximum cargo width, a tall standard roof, and a tight turning circle — a huge asset in maneuverability.

This year sees the addition of more safety features, including the options of forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a camera system to replace the conventional rearview mirror.

No speed demon, the ProMaster excels in the areas of ride comfort, stability, and maneuverability. Large front-row windows and a massive raked windshield provide good forward vision. The standard rearview camera is a boon, and optional side windows improve peripheral vision.

The 3.6-liter V6 develops 260 lb-ft of torque. Torque is the force that gets things moving. This is a decent amount, useful for towing and hauling. It doesn’t struggle when the van is loaded, and the 6-speed automatic transmission keeps the power coming when required.

The ProMaster’s front-drive layout makes an important contribution to traction and stability. And the new-for-2021 crosswind assistance is especially welcome in high-sided ProMaster variants. However, the steering could benefit from a better on-center feel and less vagueness.

A big commercial van is more about utility and capability than comfort, but the Ram ProMaster delivers in this important area. An optional suspension-enhanced driver’s seat improves long-haul comfort; optional swiveling seats bring easier access to the rear.

There are three wheelbase lengths, two roof heights, four body lengths, and up to 17 tie-downs. Factor in the racks, shelves, and workbenches available from upfitters, and buyers can create a van for virtually any purpose. For some, the low load floor and high ceiling are good enough reasons to choose the ProMaster.

The European-inspired design of the 2021 ProMaster quite rightly emphasizes function over frills, with a short hood, tall roof, and a massive windshield for maximum vision.

The ProMaster offers three chassis (1500, 2500, or 3500), three wheelbases (118, 136, or 159 inches), two roof options (low or high). And solid side panels or with windows.

The ProMaster also offers a choice of a sliding door on the passenger side or sliding doors for both sides. Each with openings wide enough to fit a standard pallet.

The longest wheelbase offers an extended-cab option. Ram also provides the ProMaster in Chassis Cab and Cutaway versions, ideal for upfitters and custom van operations.

FRONT-DRIVE LAYOUT
Most vans are driven by their rear wheels (or all four), but the 2021 Ram ProMaster employs front-wheel drive exclusively. This configuration optimizes stability and provides great traction in snow and wet weather (the engine’s weight is over the wheels). The absence of a center driveshaft and rear differential also enables a low floor, which is ideal for loading and unloading.

DRIVER’S SUSPENSION SEAT
This optional driver’s seat takes its cue from big rigs, adding a pneumatic suspension between the seat bottom and seat base. The seat moves in relation to bumps and dips, keeping the driver isolated from hard surfaces and lessening fatigue.

The steering wheel adjusts for reach, but not height. At least the 2021 ProMaster also comes with power windows, a rearview camera, 180-amp alternator, auxiliary oil coolers for the engine and transmission, air conditioning (as a deletable item), plus a user-friendly infotainment system that has USB and auxiliary inputs, and a 4-speaker sound system.

In the safety department, electronic traction and stability control are standard, along with trailer sway control, six airbags, hill start assist (keeping the van from rolling back on steep inclines), and crosswind assistance.

As with other commercial vans, the rest of the ProMaster is a framework for the owner and the extensive upfitter industry to equip according to the van’s ultimate deployment.

This year sees some driver aids join a long options list that also includes a pneumatic-suspension driver’s seat, heated front seats, 3-across seating, sliding side doors (with or without windows), heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, overhead shelf, engine block heater, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, navigation, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, and a new digital rearview camera/mirror.

Regardless of capabilities, roof heights, and wheelbases, every 2021 Ram ProMaster van has a 3.6-liter V6 generating 280 horsepower. A 6-speed automatic transmission directs drive to the front wheels.
