Subaru offers a generous bang for your buck offer with the 2021 Crosstrek. It is available in five models with three engines, including a hybrid option and continuously variable automatic (CVT) or manual transmission. New for 2021, the Crosstrek gets a cosmetic upgrade with a refreshed grille and front bumper. Adaptive Cruise Control now comes standard on models with the 2.0-liter engine and the CVT. The Sport and Limited models borrow the Forester’s time-tested 182 horsepower 2.5-liter engine.

KBB Review Highlights

Finding the sweet space between SUV and hatchback, the 2021 Crosstrek offers a versatile and capable experience for buyers desiring a no-compromise option. The 5-seater from Subaru debuted in 2012 at the New York International Auto Show for the 2013 model year. The modified version of the Impreza Hatchback would soon get a global rename as the Crosstrek and become a beloved offer from the brand known for reliable durability and impressive off-road handling. Fast-forward to today, when the Crosstrek is one of the Japanese automaker’s most important and best-selling vehicles.

In alignment with its lineage, the 2021 Crosstrek delivers a comfortable and controlled ride experience that is uncomplicated and efficient. With customizable car-like handling through SI-Drive, standard all-wheel drive (AWD), 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and a lower center of gravity, the Crosstrek remains a compelling option that is just as at home in the carpool lane as it is dancing across snow-laced paths.

Model year 2021 brings four models (Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited) and a plug-in hybrid edition. The base Crosstrek carries over the 152 horsepower 2.0-liter flat-4 from 2020, while the Sport and Limited models now come with a standard 2.5-liter flat-4 that delivers 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, which was first seen in the brand’s larger sibling, the Forester. Catering to Subaru’s hands-on, outdoor-loving audience, the 2.0-liter remains available with a CVT or 6-speed manual transmission, while the larger 2.5 is solely mated to the CVT. Buyers seeking a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option will rejoice with the Crosstrek Hybrid. With an all-electric range of 17 miles, it employs a 2.0-liter flat-4 engine paired with two electric motors.

All trims provide a pleasantly responsive drive, but our testing team found the 2.5-liter’s gumption, extra torque, and energy provided the most satisfying experience.

The interior of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is surprisingly roomy for its segment. Subaru has strategically placed the seating for comfort and ease of access. Slim roof pillars and generously cut windows allow for clear views and unobstructed sight lines. The simple dash retains simple-to-use knobs and buttons for most functions, though a 6.5-inch smartphone-enabled touchscreen marks the front of the cabin. Space in the front and rear of the cabin is well organized, and the cargo area expands to 55.3 cubic feet.

Distinctively Subaru, the 2021 Crosstrek’s exterior looks familiar, with its low body and even lines. This model year gains an updated grille and refreshed front bumper across the trim lines. The new Sport model includes trim-specific detailing, bolder wheel arch moldings, and gunmetal gray accents.

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

The 2021 Crosstrek is well-equipped straight from the factory. The base model has fabric seating, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, and SI-Drive. While it is available with either a manual transmission or a CVT, the CVT option brings the comprehensive EyeSight Safety Suite, which now includes lane-centering adaptive cruise control. Premium offers paddle shifters, an all-weather package, fog lights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Sport adds a larger engine, X-Mode all-wheel drive, and a more streamlined interior. Topping out the trim lines is Limited, which gains 18-inch alloy wheels, a larger 8-inch touchscreen, an enhanced safety suite, a push-button start, a leather interior, and a power driver’s seat.

Several customization packages are available for the 2021 Crosstrek. These factory options allow buyers to group a moonroof with other features and equipment, including a premium Harman Kardon audio system and voice-activated navigation.
