The Honda CR-V helped create the modern compact SUV class and is a benchmark in the segment. The CR-V has a long record of success, regularly being among the best-selling vehicles and racking up numerous awards, including multiple Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards over the years. The Honda CR-V arrived in America way back in 1997, just one year after the debut of its longtime rival, the Toyota RAV4. The 2023 Honda CR-V was all-new, completely redesigned, and available with both gas-powered and hybrid powertrains.

The 2023 Honda CR-V won our Best Buy Award as the best compact SUV on the market in model year 2023. It impressed us with its reliable powertrains (hybrid and internal combustion), spaciousness, comfort, and excellent feature set. Honda was among the first automakers to include a wide range of active safety features on its cars, and that includes the 2023 Honda CR-V. Every model came standard with the Honda Sensing suite that bundles adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and more.
The 2023 Honda CR-V was available in five trim levels: LX, EX, Sport Hybrid, EX-L, and Sport Touring Hybrid. LX, EX, and EX-L models use a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine making 190 horsepower. Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid models are more powerful, getting 204 hp from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor. Hybrid models earn up to 40 mpg combined.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) was standard in most models, and all-wheel drive (AWD) was optional. Sport Touring Hybrid models came with AWD standard.
While even a base LX Honda CR-V brings a lot of vehicle for the money, we’d step up at least one trim to the EX to get features like dual-zone climate control and heated front seats. If you want amenities like leather upholstery and a power tailgate, go for the EX-L or the Sport Touring Hybrid. The latter also gets you a premium 12-speaker sound system.
