The 2025 Ford Expedition and its long-wheelbase counterpart, the Expedition MAX, enter a new generation this year. The Expedition was already one of our favorite full-size SUVs and is perennially on our Best Family Cars list, and our testing confirmed that the new model is better than ever. However, it’s not the bestseller in its class; that title goes to its rivals from Chevrolet. The Expedition competes with the Chevy Tahoe, while the Expedition MAX contends against the Chevy Suburban. This competitive set also includes the GMC Yukon/Yukon XL as well as the Jeep Wagoneer/Wagoneer L.
Some of the Expedition’s competitors have lower starting prices and more cargo room. However, this SUV’s cavernous passenger space, impressive towing muscle, and surprisingly reasonable fuel costs from its turbo V6 make for a compelling package for families who can benefit from many seats and truck-like capabilities.
Updated technology and a few clever class-exclusive features take what was already a great SUV and make it even better with the 2025 redesign, entering its fifth generation. One of our favorite features is the Ford Split Gate, which opens like a clam to prevent stuff from rolling out of the cargo area when you open the liftgate. It also makes the Expedition the ultimate tailgating SUV.
This big SUV’s comfortable and high-tech interior includes options like massaging leather seats, a B&O audio system, and the BlueCruise hands-free driving system that makes it one of our favorite vehicles in any class for eating up miles on the highway. Meanwhile, the new Tremor model brings a rugged appearance inside and out with the off-road chops to back it up.
Overall, the all-new 2025 Ford Expedition and Expedition MAX do a marvelous job of combining family-friendly usability with a truck’s tough aesthetics and capabilities. They’re a must-test-drive for families in the market for a full-size SUV.
