Relationships require compromise. That’s as true in marriage as it is for Rivian and its customers.
Among the updates to the 2027 Rivian R1 lineup announced this week was a new standard wheel and tire combo on the 2027 R1T pickup truck. The tires are less efficient, but more capable.
The R1T pickup truck shifts from last year’s standard 22-inch wheels that enabled 329 miles of range to standard 20-inch wheels and Goodyear all-season tires that lower range to 300 miles. It costs $1,000 to get the 22-inch wheels that were standard last year and access the potential 329-mile range.
Why?
“Real-world customer data shows our owners love taking their R1T off the pavement,” a Rivian spokesperson told Kelley Blue Book via email. “Making the 20-inch Adventure All-Season standard gives most buyers the exact balance of utility, comfort, and multi-surface grip they want out of the box, while keeping 22-inch Sport and Range Wheels readily available for highway-range purists.”
Let them have choice.
Yet Rivian’s claim that the new standard wheel and tire combo “gives you more traction for every off-road adventure without the on-road range sacrifice…” is only accurate in a certain light. The range is sacrificed by 29 miles compared to the 22-inch setup, but it is more efficient than the 20-inch All-Terrain package.
That All-Terrain package is now available only with the Long Range (formerly Max) build for the R1T Premium. The package costs $4,950 and lowers the range from 420 to 370 miles.
The new 20-inch All-Season setup is a no-cost option for buyers of the R1T Premium Long Range, and the range is 380 miles. They could also opt for the 22-inch wheels for full max range of 420 miles at no extra cost.
So, yes, the new standard tire and its taller sidewalls have 10 miles more range than the AT tires. With deeper tread patterns and a “more durable rubber compound,” they are more off-road capable than the 22s at the cost of some on-road range.
“Our new 20-inch Adventure All-Season gives drivers that off-road utility and compliance without the heavy range penalty of a knobby AT tire,” the Rivian spokesperson explained.
Winter-Worthy Grip
As an added bonus, the new standard tire is Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) certified, meaning it doubles as a winter tire. That certification requires it to provide 10% more grip in packed snow than a standard tire. In most cases, you can leave those new All-Seasons on in, well, all seasons, with no need for chains or tire swaps.
They’re also cheaper to replace than the Pirelli tires on the 20-inch All-Terrain setup, Rivian says. Sounds like the range compromise is worth the convenience.
“Based on how our customers actually use their trucks, making the versatile 20-inch All-Season standard gives most drivers the ideal mix of everyday efficiency, winter traction, and trail capability right out of the box,” Rivian said.
That kind of compromise should make for a happy marriage.
