You asked, Rivian has answered: Let them have captain’s chairs!

For the first time, the Rivian R1S can be had with second-row captain’s chairs in the 2027 model, converting its bestseller from a 7-person to a 6-person 3-row SUV. In a press release issued today, Rivian said second-row captain’s chairs were the “most requested interior feature” since the R1S launched in 2022.

Other changes to the 2027 R1 line include a new trim structure that aligns with the Rivian R2, a new name for the Max pack that is now available on the base R1 models, and a new standard wheel package that eats into range on the R1T pickup truck.

The Esker Silver paint that looks like liquid metal migrates from the R2 and is now offered on the R1.

What’s in a Rivian Name?

For 2027, Rivian is steering away from naming its trims after the number of motors in its electric siblings. The R1 Dual is now Premium; the R1 Tri is Performance; the Quad remains the same. The specs are mostly the same, so only the names are unchanged, as listed below.

Another naming change occurs with the battery size. Since the Standard 92.5-kWh battery was canceled in June, Rivian was left with the 108.5-kWh Large pack and the 140-kWh Max pack. The Max pack is now called Long Range, and for the first time, it is available on the base Premium. It is standard on both the Performance and Quad models.

Changes to the 2027 Rivian R1S

You can skip the second-row bench that seats three for two captain’s chairs. Armrests fold up flush to the seat side for easier access, and retractable cupholders in the seat bottoms give each occupant convenient access to drinks.

The captain’s chairs are heated and power fold flat. It appears there is a manual handle to slide the seats forward, and no mention of a tilt-and-slide function, so users will likely have to go down the aisle to reach the third row.

The flexibility creates a long pass-through for items such as skis to slide under the two seats in the third row and down the aisle.

The captain’s chairs require $1,500 and the $2,500 Sound + Vision package that bundles premium audio with a glass roof, so it’s $4,000 total with the standard Black Mountain interior. If you lighten it up with the Ocean Coast interior, the total goes to $6,000.

For Performance and Quad builds, there is a $1,500 captain’s chairs upgrade that unlocks two exclusive interior configurations: Ocean Coast Signature with Driftwood ($4,000 total) or Slate Sky Signature with Walnut Wood ($4,500 total).

Changes to the 2027 Rivian R1T

The R1T pickup truck shifts from standard 22-inch wheels with 329 miles of range in 2026 to standard 20-inch wheels and Goodyear all-season tires that lower range to 300 miles, or 380 miles on Premium Long Range (from 420 miles). It costs $1,000 to get the 22-inch wheels that were standard last year.

Rivian says the 20-inch wheel and tire combo provide more traction for off-roading. It’s a no-cost option on R1T Performance and has a range of 348 miles.

Built in Illinois, the 2027 Rivian R1S and R1T can be ordered now.
