What Is a Torcal? Bentley’s First Electric SUV

A glimpse of the upcoming Bentley Torcal EV.
  • Bentley released the name of its fourth model, Torcal, to be revealed Sept. 23, 2026.
  • The Torcal is believed to be Bentley’s much-anticipated electric SUV.
  • Expect the Torcal to be smaller than the Bentayga.

Bentley revealed the name of its newest model, the Torcal, which is expected to be the brand’s first electric SUV. The Torcal SUV will be revealed Sept. 23, 2026, Bentley announced Monday.

It’s not every day that the bespoke British automaker reveals a new nameplate for a new model. Bentley has been teasing a full battery electric SUV since 2022, when the brand announced a planned switch for all its vehicles from combustion to electric powertrains by 2030. Bentley now says that its “luxurious urban SUV” will be the first in a series of EVs that will be a “crucial step on the journey towards an all-electric product range” by 2035.

The Torcal will join the Continental GT sports coupe and GTC convertible, the Flying Spur full-size saloon (or sedan), and the Bentayga SUV. The name Torcal honors the El Torcal de Antequera in Andalusia, Spain, a distinct geographic limestone range that looks like cave stalagmites crowning a mountain plateau.

The Torcal thus follows in the most recent Bentley naming conventions to honor a natural wonder. Bentayga is named for a volcanic rock formation on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. Batur, the limited coachbuilt coupe named after Lake Batur in Bali, debuted in 2022, following the exclusive Bacalar convertible, which was named after a town in southern Mexico near Belize that’s also known as the Lake of Seven Colors.

Bentley also noted that the name Torcal is derived from the Latin torquere, meaning to twist, and is the root from which the modern word torque also traces its foundation. Dual-motor electric vehicles often generate more torque than combustion counterparts.

We’ll know more late in September.
