Volkswagen Recalls ID.4 EVs for Battery Fire Risk

Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 ID.4 EV SUVs because the high-voltage battery could catch fire.

The recall covers 2023-2026 models. The cause of the issue is under investigation. Volkswagen says that certain charging profiles, and charging beyond 80%, could “trigger a thermal propagation internal to the high-voltage battery,” according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This chain reaction may lead to overheating between battery cells, increasing fire risk.

VW is working on a remedy. The important thing to know is that, until then, owners should keep the vehicles’ charge limit at 80% or lower.

Owners can expect notification by mail starting Nov. 27. Another notice will go out when the fix is available.
