In an effort to create more harmony between its gas-powered and electric vehicles, early 2027 will see the reintroduction of Volkswagen’s ID.4 compact electric SUV under a new name: ID. Tiguan. This move further signals the company’s latest product strategy, following VW’s other new European debuts with the “ID.” prefix.
The outgoing ID.4 made its global debut in 2020, originally coming out of one of the company’s German factories but eventually moving production to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2022, taking the place of the late Passat sedan. Offered in single- or dual-motor configurations with an EPA range rating of up to 291 miles, it has often fallen to the wayside of faster-charging and better-handling competitors. Expectedly, its sales have been on a downward trajectory for the last several years, but VW believes that this re-work will do enough to help people forget about those previous shortcomings.
The new ID. Tiguan is still largely the same vehicle, riding on the same platform as before and carrying similar dimensions to VW’s standard, gas-powered Tiguan compact SUV. The styling receives a genuine makeover, one that will likely give it a fraternal twin appearance to its gas counterpart. The company is only releasing photos of a colorfully camouflaged prototype at the moment.
What we can see is a reworking of the side daylight opening, as well as a front grille and fascia treatment similar to the overseas ID. Polo model. There is at least one new 21-inch wheel design to choose from, and the interior gets a fresh infusion of physical controls and retro flare.
The new ID. Tiguan hits the streets in Europe first, with American roads welcoming it before the end of 2027. Whether it will be built in Tennessee at that point remains to be seen, but stay tuned for its full debut in October for more details.
